Boyertown relay shines at Ursinus Open

URSINUS OPEN » The Boyertown boys’ distance medley relay and Perkiomen Valley’s Christina Warren and Cole Peterlin led a group of locals at the season-opening Ursinus Open.

Boyertown seniors Todd Barton, Dominic Derafelo, Josh Endy and junior Payton Stanziani impressed with an 11:06.10 to win their relay with second-place St. Andrews finishing 11:38.37.

Warren ran away with the girls’ 55-meter hurdles in 8.03, comfortabl­y ahead of runner-up Tia Taylor of Saint Basil (8.52).

Peterlin, the quarterbac­k of the PAC champion Perkiomen Valley football team in the fall, cleared 6-5 to win the boys’ high jump.

Owen J. Roberts’ Scott Honicker was second in the 55-meter hurdles in 7.78, trailing only Germantown Academy’s Kyle Garland (7.35). Spring-Ford’s Stephen Chapman and Methacton Alex Yablonski were 7th (8.18) and 8th (8.26), respective­ly.

Methacton was third in the 4x200 with Julie Byrne, Marina Daywalt, Amy Domenick and Camillie Dunham clocking 1:48.59. Boyertown’s Aurora Conrad, Emma Elwell, Kristi Kada and Lillian Mauger came in 7th.

Boyertown sophomore Christian McComb placed third in the mile with a 4:32.63.

In the boys’ 55 meters, Pottsgrove’s Ashon Calhoun was 9th (6.85) Perkiomen School’s Sunmakin Orafidiya 10th (6.86).

Girls basketball

GOOD COUNSEL 55, BOYERTOWN 38 » The Bears dropped their second straight at the She Got Game Tournament in Washington D.C.

Rayne Tucker scored a game-high 18 points to lead Good Counsel (MD) while Chloe Chapman (13 points) Madison Hary (10) also hit for double digits. Julia Smith led Boyertown with 13 points, including three 3-pointers, while Kylie Webb followed with 10 points.

PARKDALE 41, BOYERTOWN 31 » The defending PIAA Class 6A champion Boyertown girls basketball team began the season with a 41-31 loss against Parkdale (MD) Friday night in the She Got Game Tournament in Washington, D.C.

Leading 22-21 after three, the Panthers utilized a decisive 19-10 advantage during the fourth quarter to put it away. Drew Calhoun scored a game-high 21 points with three 3-pointers while Ragan Johnson followed with 11 points in the win.

For Boyertown, Kylie Webb scored a team-high 10 points while Julia Smith scored nine.
