Harvey helps Pitt knock off Sooners

» The 19th-ranked Pittsburgh wrestling team knocked off No. 18 Oklahoma 19-18 in a dual match on Jan. 7 in Pittsburgh and Harvey posted a 6-3 decision in the 184-pound bout for the Panthers. The redshirt sophomore scored an 8-3 decision in a 28-11 dual match loss to No. 25 North Dakota State on Jan. 5, also in Pittsburgh. He has a 10-7 overall record and a 3-4 record in dual matches with a major decision. Pittsburgh is 2-6 in dual matches to date. IVAN ESCOTT (BOYERTOWN) » The freshman has quickly become a key performer with the Eastern Illinois men’s swim team. The Panthers opened the second half of the season with a non-conference dual meet loss to Evansville, 158-130, on Jan. 13 in Evansville, Ind. and Escott swam a leg on the winning 200 medley (1:37.66) and he finished first in the 100 butterfly (52.66). He also finished second in the 200 butterfly (1:59.00). In a 121-84 triumph over Evansville on Jan. 20, he took the 100 fly (52.32) and swam legs on the winning 800 free relay (7:13.17) and the 200 medley relay (1:35.30).
DAVID CAMPBELL (BOYERTOWN)
» The freshman 133-pounder gave Bucknell early momentum in a 21-10 win over Harvard on Jan. 19.
Campbell hit a takedown in the first sudden victory period for a 3-1 win over Samuel Goldman. A day later in a 18-13 loss to Brown, Campbell took a narrow defeat to Hunter Kosco, 3-2.
Bucknell is 2-9 overall and 1-3 in the EIWA amid a very difficult schedule, including No. 1 Penn State and No. 10 Lehigh.
David Campbell and 2-14 on the year while brother Jakob is 3-8. SYDNEY GUNDERSEN (EXETER) » Ursinus senior Sydney Gundersen has her name all over this season’s Centennial Conference women’s swimming performance list which is nothing new.
The Exeter Township grad stands first in the 200 freestyle, second in the 100 freestyle, third in the 50 freestyle, fourth in the 100 breaststroke, fifth in the 200 IM and ninth in the 1,000 freestyle. And that’s not to mention the relays. As a junior, Gundersen earned four first-place finishes, three in relays and one in the 100 freestyle, along with two secondplace finishes at the conference championship. As a freshman and sophomore, she was part of four winning relays.
“I think Sydney is the most impactful swimmer in the conference,” veteran coach Mark Feinberg said. “She does it all – and with a smile on her face. She has a quiet confidence and is absolutely most interested in the team’s success over individual awards.
Gundersen is looking to wrap up her career just how she started it as a freshman when she set a school record in the 50 free (24.05). She also is a member of two record-breaking relays teams – the 200 and 400 freestyle.
The Bears are 8-1 overall and 4-0 in Centennial meets. They faced Division I Villanova on Jan. 20 and suffered their first loss of the season,178-81. Gundersen swam a leg on the winning 400 free relay (3:42.65) and the 200 medley relay which finished third (1:49.83). She was fourth in both the 100 free (55.37) and 200 free (1:58.35) behind three Wildcats in each race. XAVIER SMITH (DANIEL BOONE) » The senior is off to a solid start sprinting with the Penn State men’s indoor track team. He kicked off the season by finishing third in the 60 meter dash in 6.86 and running a leg on the winning 4x400 relay at the Nittany Lion Challenge on Jan. 13 in University Park. On Jan. 19-20, at the Clemson Invitational in Clemson, S.C., Smith finished fourth in the 60 and his 6.74 time ranks fifth in the Big Ten Conference. The 4x400 finished third and the 3:08.17 time stands second in the conference.
