- From Chestnut Knoll

Thomas R. Miller Jr., a resident of Chestnut Knoll Personal Care and Memory Care, Boyertown, recently celebrated his 100th birthday on Jan. 18.

He was born in Chester, Pa. on Jan. 18, 1918 the second child to Thomas R. Miller Sr. and Katharine Bowley Miller. Thomas Jr. had a sister, Marion, who was 12 years his elder.

He attended Chester High School and graduated in 1935. During WWII, Thomas Jr. joined the Army as part of the 313th Artillery stationed in Italy. He served his country and fellow service members by specializing as a field medic.

Thomas Jr. married his sweetheart, Elsie May Clements on May 21, 1942. The couple would come to welcome their first and only child, a son, named Thomas R Miller III. He is also the grandfather to Deirdra M. Miller and Thomas A. Miller.

One of his many great achievements was earning a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Penn State University. Thomas Jr. worked hard as a Plant Manager and later the Manager of Personnel for several manufacturing plants. In an exchange of technology and talent, Thomas Jr. had the opportunity in 1964 to spend 14 weeks in Japan teaching the Japanese how to manufacturer resin.

He credits his longevity to an excellent diet, good genes and great cooking! He enjoys exercising, attending The Men’s Club and participating in various activities offered at Chestnut Knoll.

The wisdom he would like to share with his younger generation is to obey their parents, keep responsible hours and good company.

State Rep. Marcy Toepel presented Thomas Jr. with a 100-year state congressional certificate to commemorate his centenarian status during his birthday celebration at Chestnut Knoll.
