Bears baseball blasts off in opener

- Staff reports

Baseball

It may have been the first game of the year, but the Boyertown baseball team appeared to be in mid-season form Saturday.

With Austyn Levengood and Caleb Harrison sparking the offense, the Bears handled Muhlenberg, 11-2 in a non-conference showing. They proved particularly opportunistic against the host Muhls, scoring five unearned runs in the top of the fifth to erase Muhlenberg’s initial 2-1 lead.

Levengood was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three steals, and Harrison was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs. Mitchell Peers and A.J. Kline each drove in pairs of runs for Boyertown, which capped their day with a five-run seventh at-bat.

Drew Hartman, pitching 2-2/3 innings in relief of starter Mike Hohlfeld, got the win off his onehit, three-strikeout performance. Boyertown’s four pitchers seeing action — Gavin Henderson and Jared Waldman closed out in relief — combined to fan nine and limit the Muhls to six hits.

Jake Kuczawa went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Dean Light doubled for Muhlenberg, which sustained its first loss of the season.

OLEY VALLEY 1, OWEN J. ROBERTS 0

» The Wildcats could muster only two hits against Lynx’ starter Reece Kauffman during this nonconference showing.

The game’s lone run came in the bottom of the third inning when Oley’s Gavin Troutman scored on a sacrifice fly by Zach Pellock. OJR’s biggest threat came in the top of the first inning when Andy Blum hit a two-out triple but was stranded at third. OJR used five different pitchers and held Oley to just three hits. Kauffman’s pitching line included a walk and a strikeout in the win.
