Reading Symphony Orchestra presents ‘Beethoven Piano Concerto’
The Reading Symphony Orchestra presents Beethoven Piano Concerto on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 7:30 p.m. at the Santander Performing Arts Center.
The program features acclaimed pianist Julio Elizalde, with the orchestra under the direction of Music Director Andrew Constantine, performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Minor. The evening is rounded out with Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s pattern-based Fratres and Schumann’s majestic and exuberant Third Symphony.

“From the splendor of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 to the mystery of Fratres, this night promises a journey that starts in the contemporary, and slowly draws the audience deeper into musical history with some of the classics of the romantic era,” said Constantine. • Pärt: Fratres Featuring composer Arvo Pärt’s signature and unique tintinnabuli style, this rich harmonic piece has fascinated composers worldwide since its composition in 1977. Rearranged no less than 18 times for numerous instruments, its mathematical, pattern-based perfection must be experienced firsthand.
• Schumann: Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major
Also known as Rhenish, this piece from 1850 was inspired by composer Robert Shumann’s trip to the Rhineland. Woven throughout the piece are musical illustrations of western Germany’s fairy-tale landscapes, from romantic countrysides and rivers to snowy mountains and deep valleys.
• Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Minor
This piece from 1800 combines powerful and romantic movements with one of the first compositions to experiment with an extended piano range. Pianist Julio Elizalde will take concertgoers back in time with his performance of this demanding concerto from one of history’s most dazzling and famous composers.
