Bernotas sisters impress for Eastern track and field

The Bernotas sisters opened a few eyes at Franklin & Marshall’s Coach I Open.

Junior Megan, sophomore Katelyn and freshman Mary, all Owen J. Roberts graduates, came up big for the Eastern women’s indoor track team at the meet on Jan. 12 in Lancaster, the first event of the season for the Eagles.

Megan finished first out of 26 runners in the 3,000 meter run with a personal best time of 10:41.63.

“It was the first time that Megan ran the 3,000 and her time was the second fastest in the Middle Atlantic Conference and ranks among the top 50 in the country,” coach Mike Wilson said. “Megan is a tireless leader, a team captain and an excellent leader for our young program.”

Katelyn took first place in the 1,000 meter run with a time of 3:11.48. She also finished second in the 400 meter dash in 1:03.71.

“Katelyn has the range from 200 to the mile and is arguably the toughest athlete on the roster,” Wilson said. “She is going to do some big things on a conference, regional and national level.”

Mary finished second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:24.84 and was right behind her sister in third place in the 400 with a time of 1:04.56. BECCA HEMINGWAY (BOYERTOWN) >> The sophomore earned two PSAC qualifying marks for her efforts with the Kutztown women’s indoor track team at the college’s Golden Bear Invitation­al on Jan. 11 in Kutztown. Hemmingway finished second in the high jump with a personal best mark of 5 feet, 3 inches. She also finished second in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 5 ¼ inches. Hemingway finished 13th in the long jump (17 feet, 1 ¾ inches) and 15th in the high jump (4 feet, 11¾ inches) at last year’s PSAC Indoor Championsh­ip. KYLE GORANT (THE HILL

SCHOOL) >> The Davidson wrestling team was beaten 34-4 by Franklin & Marshall on Jan. 4 in Lancaster and 39-3 by Brown on Jan. 11 in Davidson, N.C. and the true freshman from Coopersbur­g was the only Wildcat to score points in both matches. Gorant, competing at 133 pounds, scored a 12-3 major decision against Franklin & Marshall and had a 8-3 decision against Brown. He’s 10-8 overall and 6-2 in dual meets and has six falls, two major decisions and two technical falls. KIRSTEN SIWY (UPPER PERKIOMEN) >> The King’s women’s swim team was beaten by Messiah (177-85) and Arcadia (158-104) in a tri-meet on Jan. 12 in Wilkes-Barre but the junior came up big for the Monarchs. Siwy finished first in the 100 breaststro­ke (1:09.90), the 200 breaststro­ke (2:31.86) and the 200 IM (2:20.16). The versatile performer has the top times for the team in all three events as well as the 100 and 200 freestyle and the 400 IM and she’s second on the performanc­e list in the 50 free and the 100 butterfly. TERESA DRAVES (BOYERTOWN) >> The Washington College women’s swim team dropped a 146-116 non-league meet to Catholic on Jan. 12 in Chestertow­n, Md. but the freshman had a solid meet for the Shorewomen. Draves won the 200 breaststro­ke in 2:32.37, finished second in the 100 breaststro­ke in 1:14.27 and was second in the 200 IM in 2:18.63. The versatile persomer also competes in the 500 free, the 100 and 200 backstroke, the 200 butterfly and the 400 IM as well as swimming legs on three of the top relay teams. RAE RAE TAYLOR (OWEN J.

ROBERTS) >> The sophomore multi-events athlete posted a pair of ECAC Division III Indoor Track Championsh­ip qualifiers competing with the Penn State Harrisburg women’s indoor track team at The College of New Jersey Lions Indoor Invitation­al on Jan. 12 at the Armory Track & Field Center in New York City. Taylor finished eighth in the long jump with a 17 foot, ½ inch effort and was 11th in the 60 meter hurdles with a personal best time of 9.69. She finished third in the pentathlon at the ECAC Championsh­ips last March. DARNELL RANDALL (PERKIOMEN VALLEY) >> The junior kicked off the second semester with the East Stroudsbur­g men’s indoor track team with a big performanc­e in Kutztown’s Golden Bear Invitation­al on Jan. 11 in Kutztown. Randall captured the long jump with a 23 foot, 8 ¼ inch effort and came in second in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 8 ¾ inches. He also finished ninth in the 55 meter dash with a personal best time of 6.89. His long jump performanc­e was an NCAA Division III provisiona­l mark and earned him a spot in the PSAC Championsh­ips.
