Kapp making a mark for Bucknell women’s basketball
The Bucknell women’s basketball team is 18-4 and tied for first place with American in the Patriot League standings and the 6-0 sophomore has come up big in two recent league victories. She had 10 points and five rebounds in a 77-43 victory over Navy on Jan. 30 in Annapolis, Md. and had 14 points and three steals in a 62-51 triumph over Boston University on Feb. 2 in Boston, Mass. Kapp has started all 22 games and is averaging 9.3 points and 2.8 rebounds with 27 assists and a team-high 35 steals. The sophomore is 13-3 overall and 9-1 in dual matches at 125 pounds for the No. 8-ranked Kutztown wrestling team. Wilde has six major decisions and two technical falls to help the Golden Bears post a 12-1 overall record and a 4-0 mark in PSAC matches after a 33-9 league victory over No. 25-ranked Millersville last Tuesday in Millersville. He won his match via a forfeit. Junior Lucas Miller (Boyertown) is competing at 133 pounds and is 10-6 overall and 3-3 in dual matches
Nomi Washington is wrapping up her career with the Cabrini University women’s basketball team in fine style.
The 5-foot-7 senior guard from Phoenixville and a Phoenixville High graduate, is the top performer the Cavaliers who are 14-8 overall and 9-0 and in first place in the Atlantic East Conference. Washington has started all 22 games and leads the team in scoring with a 14.6 average. She also leads the team in steals with 67 and is second in rebounding at 6.0 per game and has 38 assists.
On Alumni Day on Jan. 27 in Radnor, Washington scored a career-high 31 points in 36 minutes of action with nine rebounds and four assists in a 91-74 league victory over Gwynedd Mercy.
“Nomi is a player that other teams have to prepare for at both ends of the floor,” coach Kate Pearson said. “She has great instincts defensively and will disrupt the opponents’ offense with deflections and steals, generating points from her defense.”
The stats tell the story on offense.
“Nomi can attack the basket and finish at the rim or kill you with the pull up jumper,” the coach said.
There’s also another side of Washington that doesn’t show up in the score book.
“It is Nomi’s senior leadership that has made a real impact,” Pearson said. “She has become not just the go-to player for a big play, but the go-to player for her teammates to look to when they need help. Her experience and presence on the court provides stability and we will continue to lean on her to lead us the rest of the way.”
Washington has 1,123 points, 488 rebounds, 288 steals and 181 assists in 105 career games. She currently stands second in steals and 11th in points in the Cabrini record book.
The red-shirt junior competed in six events for the Bloomsburg men’s swim team to lead the Huskies to the title at the John A. Pidgeon Memorial Invitational on Jan. 29 in Indiana – and he finished first in all six of them. Individually, Dix captured the 50 free (21.30), the 100 free (47.31) and the 100 butterfly (51.01). And, he swam a leg on three winning relays – the 400 medley (3:31.59), the 200 free (1:27.20) and the 400 free (3:14.42). Freshman Pat Agnew (Pottsgrove) captured the 100 breaststroke (1:00.87), junior Colin Bauer (Owen J. Roberts) was a member of the 200 and 400 free relays and senior Matthew Schulz (Methacton) was a member of the 200 medley relay (1:37.17) for Bloomsburg. The freshman from Douglassville continues to garner awards for her performance with the Michigan women’s gymnastics team. The was named Co-Big Ten Gymnast and Freshman of the Week on Jan. 29 after she posted a season-best score of 39.625 to capture the all-round title in a 196.400-193.525 league victory over Maryland on Jan. 26 in College Park, Md. She has 10 individual titles and has finished first in allaround in all four meets for the Wolverines this season. She was Big Ten Gymnast of the Week and Freshman of the Week on Jan. 8 and Freshman of the Week on Jan. 15 and the 22.
The senior finished fourth in the pentathlon for the College of Charleston women’s indoor track team at South Carolina’s Carolina Open on Jan. 31Feb. 2 in Columbia, S.C. Martin totaled a careerbest 3162 points in a field of 16 competitors. She finished first in the shot put (34.7), fourth in the 60 meter hurdles (9.17) and the 800 meter run (2:42.15) and was sixth in the high jump (4 feet, 11 ¾ inches) and seventh in the long jump (16 feet, ½ inches). Martin’s previous best was 3040 points.
The senior guard leads the Gwynedd Mercy women’s basketball team in scoring with a 14.5 average. She’s also averaging 4.8 rebounds and is second on the team with 50 assists and tied for second with 23 steals. Bossler, despite missing three games, has led the team in scoring in 10 games. She had 22 in a 79-57 victory over Wesley on Jan. 16 and 20 points in a 91-74 loss to Cabrini on Jan. 27. The Griffins are 9-14 overall and 2-8 in Atlantic East Conference play after a 64-55 loss to Immaculata last Wednesday.
The 6-foot freshman forward has played in all 24 games with three starts for the Fordham women’s basketball team, the Rams 16-8 overall and 7-3 and in fourth place in the Atlantic 10 Conference after a 54-51 league test against St. Louis last Wednesday in the Bronx, N.Y. Jonassen is averaging 3.5 points and 3.8 rebounds a game. She had a college career-high 11 points in a 65-62 nonleague loss to Pittsburgh on Dec. 5 and had 11 points in a 65-54 league win over La Salle on Jan. 31.
The freshman finished fourth in the mile for the St. Joseph’s men’s indoor track team at the Frank Colden Invitational on Feb. 2 in Collegeville. He was the third collegiate finisher with a time of 4:28.36. Smith also ran the second leg on the 4x800 relay which finished first in 8:20.01. His previous best in the mile came when he finished sixth with a time of 4:29.09 at Lehigh’s Angry Birds Challenge on Jan. 12 in Bethlehem.
The freshman continues to do the job in the triple jump for the Morgan State women’s indoor track team. Rose finished third, the second collegian, at the Villanova Invitational on Feb. 2 at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. She hit 37 feet, 5 inches. She also finished third with a jump of 36 feet, 3½ inches at the Navy Invitational II meet on Jan. 26 in Annapolis, Md. She finished seventh in the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 1 inch in the Navy meet.
The senior had her best effort of the season with the Rider women’s indoor track team as she helped the Broncs turn back The College of New Jersey Feb. 1 in Lawrenceville, N.J. Maurer finished fourth in the triple jump with a personal record 36 foot, 1½ inch effort. She also finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet. Freshman teammate Teagan Schein-Becker (Perkiomen Valley) finished second in the 3,000 meter run (10:10.95) at the Spartan Invitational on Jan. 11 in Staten Island, N.Y.
The Indiana senior is off to a good start with the Crimson Hawks’ women’s indoor track team. She finished second out of 24 runners in the 5,000 meter run at the SU Invitational on Feb. 2 in Selinsgrove with a time of 19:12.03. Christman kicked off the indoor season by finishing fifth in the mile at the Al Hall Freedom Games on Jan. 26 in Edinboro with a personal best time of 5:37.52. She finished 19th in the 5,000 at last year’s PSAC Indoor Championships.
