An Exeter Township woman has died in a North Carolina hospital three days after being injured along with her mother in a head-on crash that killed two members of the family while traveling on vacation.

Kylie Dawson, 20, an Exeter High School graduate, was in Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in WinstonSalem Hospital along with her mother, Melissa, 48, who was listed in good condition, a spokeswoman said.

Ashley D’Archangelo, who said she is a lifelong friend of Kylie Dawson, said Melissa Dawson called her from the hospital. D’Archangelo said she was told Kylie died about 5 p.m. Aug. 7.

“We were practically raised together, Kylie and me,” D’Archangelo said.

She said Kylie was proud to be an organ donor.

“Hopefully some lives can be saved using her organs,” D’Archangelo said.

On her Facebook page, Melissa Dawson wrote: “Kylie Dawson has gone to be with Bryan Dawson and Garhett Dawson. Please hug your loved ones, family and friends. Life is short.”

Melissa Dawson was driving north on Highway 109 near Lexington in central North Carolina when the driver of a vehicle traveling the opposite direction crossed into their lane, according to the state highway patrol.

Killed in the crash were Melissa’s husband, Bryan, 48, and son, Garhett, 17.

According to North Carolina troopers, the driver of the other vehicle, 19-yearold Paxton Workman of High Point, N.C., was not injured. He has been charged with driving left of center and two counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

Garhett Dawson was to be a senior at Exeter High School this coming school year.

Exeter School District made counselors available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Friday Aug. 9 to support students and staff in the wake of the tragedy, officials announced Tuesday. No one availed themselves to counseling on Aug. 7, according to school officials.

The family was traveling to a relative’s lake house when the crash happened, according to a neighbor.

The community has rallied to help the Dawson family.

A close friend of Kylie Dawson launched a GoFundMe campaign on Tuesday to help the family.

In one day, organizer Sean Leigh said, the campaign raised more than $40,000 toward the $50,000 goal, which he called “nothing short of amazing.”
