Berks County Republicans gather for annual fall dinner
Members of the Berks County Republican Committee heard about some of the top issues dominating Harrisburg and Washington from lawmakers at their annual fall dinner earlier this month.
U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser, the freshman lawmaker who represents part of Berks County in the 9th District, filled the crowd in on the happenings at the national level while Pennsylvania House Speaker Mike Turzai discussed the latest events at the state level.
Clay Breece, chairman of the committee, said the event drew the third biggest crowd the organization has ever seen at its fall dinner since the turn of the century.
“It was a smashing success,” he said.
Breece said Meuser spoke about the importance of supporting President Donald Trump during the current impeachment inquiry taking place in the Democratic-led House. He also gave members an update on the issues he has been tackling during his first term on the job.
The keynote speaker of the evening was Turzai.
Breece said Turzai discussed the accomplishments of the Republicanled House. Highlights include adding more money to the state’s rainy day fund, reforming the state pension system, building up the energy industry, supporting pro-life legislation and protecting the Second Amendment through several bills making their way through the Legislature.
The committee also heard from Megan McCarthy King, a Republican candidate seeking a spot on the state Superior Court; Lawrence Tabas, chairman of the Republican Party of Pennsylvania; and J.R. McGee, a motivational speaker and radio personality.
Breece said the large turnout is most likely the result of the organization’s focus on growing membership and increasing its social media presence.
“We are strengthening and emboldening our Republican voters with an increased footprint in Berks County,” he said.
