Local connection carries Bloomsburg at PSACs
It was the Kyle Dix and Becca Cubbler Show for the Bloomsburg swim team at the PSAC Championships last weekend in York, the men finishing second and the women third.
Dix, a red-shirt senior and a Perkiomen Valley graduate, defended his title in the 100 breaststroke (56.00) and swam legs on the winning 200 free relay (1:21.02), the 200 medley relay (1:30.11) and the 400 medley relay (3:18.64). He also finished second in the 100 freestyle (45.03) and third in the 100 butterfly (48.39).
Senior Cubbler, from Royersford and a Spring-Ford graduate, captured her first PSAC individual title when she finished ahead of the field in the 200 freestyle (1:51.14). She also finished second to three-time defending champion Georgia Wright of West Chester in the 1,000 freestyle breaking her own school record with a time of 10:02.35. And, she finished second to Wright again in the 500 freestyle (4:56.81).

who had a good meet. He finished fifth in the 200 freestyle (1:42.74) and the 200 IM (1:53.38) and sixth in the 200 butterfly (1:53.38). And, he was part of the first place 400 medley relay and anchored the 800 free relay to a third place finish (6:50.30). Sophomore Pat Agnew (Pottsgrove) was a member of the winning 200 free relay.
Sophomore Carlie Owens (Daniel Boone) had a good meet for the women. She finished sixth in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.31), sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.78) and seventh in the 200 IM (2:10.12).
The men finished second for the fifth straight time, West Chester capturing the title for the 22nd straight season.
The senior from Limerick helped the Lehigh women’s swim team finish third out of 10 schools at the Patriot League Championship last weekend in Annapolis, Md. Miles was a member of the 200 free relay which finished second with a school record time of 1:31.29. She was also part of the 200 medley relay which finished fourth (1:41.76) and the 400 medley relay which finished fourth (3:42.56). Individually, Miles was third in the 100 freestyle (50.02) and fourth in the 50 freestyle (23.03).

last weekend in Christiansburg, Va. Basch wrapped up the tourney by finishing second in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 15:42.30. He finished second in that event as a sophomore as well. Earlier in the meet, Basch finished third in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:30.53. He was second in the prelims. The Blue Hens finished seventh in the team standings.
The red-shirt junior came up with a big effort to help the No. 10 Pittsburgh wrestling team come from behind to top No. 7 Virginia Tech 18-13 in the Panthers’ final dual match of the season last Saturday in Pittsburgh. Harvey used two takedowns and an escape to post a 5-1 decision in the 174-pound bout. It was the 40th victory of his career and lifted his season record to 15-7 heading into the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship March 8 in Pittsburgh.
The sophomore gave the Sacred Heart women’s swim team its only medal of the Northeast Conference Championship last weekend in East Meadow, N.Y. when she finished third in the 3-meter dive with a score of 2:13.35. Martin also finished fifth in the 1-meter dive with a score of 165.55. As a freshman, she finished seventh in the 1-meter and 12th in the 3-meter at the NEC Championship. The Pioneers finished sixth in this year’s meet with 277 3-point goals: Payne 2, Huff, Otoo 2, Byriel 5, TJ Berger 4, Collier, Q. Berger.

The sophomore from Phoenixville had a big prep for this weekend’s Patriot League Indoor Track Championships this weekend in Bethlehem. She won a pair of events and was part of a winning relay team for the Raiders at the college’s Class of ’32 Invitational on Feb. 14 in Hamilton, N.Y. She took the long jump (17 feet, 4 inches) and the triple jump (37 feet, 11 ½ inches). The 4x400 relay won in 4:17.63. Schaaf finished 10th in the triple jump and 19th in the long jump in the championship as a freshman.
The Kutztown senior warmed up for this weekend’s PSAC Indoor Track Championship in Edinboro with a solid performance at the Kutztown Last Chance Qualifier last Saturday. She finished second in the 55 meter dash in 7.40 and second in the 200 meter dash in 26.07. Junior Becca Hemingway (Boyertown) finished second in the long jump (18 feet, 5 inches) and third in the high jump (4 feet, 11 inches) in the Last Chance meet.

with a time of 8:44.06 and third in the 5,000 meter run in 15:27.21. Sophomore Cy Evans (Boyertown) was eighth in the 800 meter run (2:02.65) and ran legs with the DMR which finished third (10:38.16) and the 4x400 relay which finished fourth (3:32.56).
The 6-foot-1 guard was one of three players honored on Senior Day by the 19-6 Gwynedd Mercy men’s basketball team and he celebrated by scoring 28 points to lead the Griffins to a 97-94 Atlantic East Conference victory over Wesley last Saturday. He had 27 points in an 86-61 triumph over Immaculata last Friday. That gives him 15 games with 20 or more points. He leads the team with a 20.4 average and has connected on 52 of 115 3-point attempts (45.2 percent). Durham leads with 81 assists and 55 steals as well.
The junior helped the Nova Southeastern women’s swim team capture the Sunshine State Conference title on Feb. 13-15 in Clearwater, FL. Fink finished fifth in the 100 freestyle in 51.71, sixth in the 50 freestyle in 23.79 and seventh in the 200 freestyle in 1:53.44. Her effort in the 50 and 100 free made the NCAA Division II B cut. Athletes for Better Education (AFBE) will be holding regional tournaments in the Reading area (March 20-22), in Pottstown and at Red Lion High School (both March 27-29). There will be eight different age divisions for both boys and girls: 10 & under, 11 & under, 12& under, 13& under, 14& under, 15& under, 16& under and 18& under. The newly formed Tri-County Senior Men’s League (50+) is looking for additional expansion in 2020 for Southern Berks, Eastern Lancaster and Chester Counties. Most fields are located within 25 minutes of Southern Berks/ Eastern Lancaster County lines. The league is limited arc, 10 players in the field. Accepting new teams and a few teams need additional starting players. Although field slots exist, new teams are encouraged to obtain a home field that is available Mondays and/or Wednesdays and some Fridays.
