Grandview sets opening night for June 20, with fans
The long-awaited season-opening practice session at Grandview Speedway was rained out Friday night.
But that was overshadowed by good news for drivers as well as fans from the Bechtelsville dirt track.
The practice session has been rescheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m. Fans, who will be admitted for free, will be allowed in the grandstands to watch the drivers test their equipment for Grandview’s 58th consecutive year of racing.
The coronavirus-delayed season opener has been scheduled for Saturday, June 20, with a stock car doubleheader starting at 7:30 p.m. T.P. Trailers Modifieds and T.P. Truck Equipment Sportsman will compete. Fans will be admitted and concession stands will be open.
“We appreciate the continued interest and support being shown Grandview by racers, fans and media,” said track general manager Tina Rogers. “We, the Rogers family, are most anxious to get the new season started. Please remember that this is a new normal for all of us. Fans who are not sitting with family members are asked to practice social distancing. There are ample seating areas to do that when possible.”
It is recommended, if at all possible, that fans bring exact change so there is limited exchange of money. It is also recommended that all attending wear a mask when they cannot practice social distancing, but it is not mandatory.
In addition, Rogers said those planning to attend should be aware that there is no COVID-19 waiver to be signed for the event.
The first Enduro action of the season is scheduled for Sunday, June 14, at 1 p.m. Joining the Outlaw Enduros will be the vintage racers and 600 modifieds.
On Friday, more than 70 cars were at Grandview with empty grandstands for the first scheduled practice session. But showers forced the practice to be postponed after just 30 minutes.
Big Diamond Speedway in Schuylkill County will hold an open practice without fans today from 12:30-3 p.m. Following the open practice, the vintage cars will take the track for their program followed by the Enduro cars that will compete in a 50-lap dash.
Big Diamond’s opener, with drivers and fans, is scheduled for Friday, June 12. Gates will open at 5 p.m. with warm-ups getting underway at 7:15 p.m. Racing will begin at 7:45.
