Tina Boyd was still unsure about what kind of law she wanted to practice when she landed a position as a law clerk for former Berks County Judge Elizabeth Ehrlich more than two decades ago.

She received a crash course in family law, and quickly found that she had a passion for it.

“When I started working for Judge Ehrlich I witnessed her dedication and saw the love that she had for her job,” she said. “She really put a lot of thought into the decisions she made and, as time went on, I decided that was what I wanted to do with my career.”

The Oley Township attorney said her professional ambition is to follow in her footsteps to one day serve on the bench in Berks County.

This will be third time Boyd has campaigned for county judge. She was one of four candidates who competed for a vacancy on the bench in 2017 and one

of eight candidates who ran for three vacancies in 2015.

She is running for one of two open seats on ballots this year. Judge James M. Bucci retired last year, and Judge Mary Ann Ullman has announced that she will retire when her term expires in December.

Boyd worked in private practice for about 10 years before joining the Boyd & Karver law firm in Boyertown, where she maintains a general practice of law with concentrations in divorce, custody, child support, adoption and protection-from-abuse orders.

In addition to her work with the law firm, she serves as special counsel for the Berks County Office Of Domestic Relations and previously served on the board of directors for Safe Berks.

“Navigating the court system can be a complicated process,” the 49-yearold said. “Cases involving families are very emotional and very unsettling. I have always wanted to help people so this is the way that I chose to do that.”

Boyd said she believes her two decades of professional experience and her personal background have provided her with the dedication and the background needed to serve.

“I want to bring my hard work to the Berks County bench,” she said.

Boyd is likely to face some competition for a spot. Spring Township attorney James Gavin was the first to officially announce his campaign last month
