Events for older adults

Bay Area Older Adults is hosting a museum tour, an aging seminar and a stroll along the river this month.

On today's private tour of the Santa Clara Fire Museum, curators will explain the history of the building and the city of Santa Clara starting from the early 1800s, as well as the different modes of transporta­tion used over time, from the hose cart pulled by firemen and its bucket brigade to gas-powered fire engines. Artifacts include handwritte­n log books, photos, helmets, an old alarm system, pull boxes and a 911 memorial.

An April 18 virtual seminar on the science of aging is set for 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. The seminar will cover the genetic and environmen­tal components of aging, stem cell research, some of the successful interventi­ons that ameliorate the functional decline that happens as we age and the latest therapeuti­c strategies that are in developmen­t for these diseases. The informatio­n will be presented in simple easy-to-understand terms by a scientist with more than 25 years of experience.

A leisurely walk along the Guadalupe River on April 27 includes visits to the Heritage Rose Garden, the historic fruit orchard and the Guadalupe community garden and education center to see the exhibits. The walk is set for 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and will end with a picnic lunch.
