Remember James Stoddard
ThisWednesday, Sept. 30, will mark the 15th anniversary of the tragic passing of Army Sg.t 1st Class James J. Stoddard Jr., of Crofton. Sgt. Stoddard was killed when the Humveehewas riding in rolledover a 7-foot cliff in Afghanistan.
A 1994 graduate of Arundel High School and aCrofton resident fromage 8, Stoddard was knownas much for his friendship as he was for his athletic talent in football and baseball. To carry on his legacy, he left behind a beautiful wife, Amy, and three beautiful children, Megan, James J. III “Jay,” and Makenzie, his beloved mother, Kathleen Stoddard, and two beloved sisters, Bridgett and Katherine, who continue to mourn his passing year after year.
Stoddard’s family ties in this community are wide and strong.
Crofton High School has anewtaxpayerfunded football stadium that should bear the name of this courageous hero before a game is ever played there. Stoddard volunteered to serve and wrote a blank check to this country for an amount up to and including his life. Sadly, the gift of that precious check was cashed 15 years ago when hewas killed.
ThisWednesday, on the 15th anniversary of his ultimate sacrifice, it would be a wonderful tribute for Crofton residents to come together in his honor. Naming the Crofton High School football stadium after Sgt. Stoddard would be proof that some sacrifices are so sacred that they will be forever remembered by our community. It would allow us all to continue to say Sgt. Stoddard’s name and never let him or his sacrifice for us be forgotten.
Finally, it will inspire future generations by demonstrating the high value the Crofton community places on selflessly serving and sacrificing for our country. TANIA HENDRICKSON
