No. 1 seed Halep falls in Paris

Iga Swiatek upset 2018 champion and No. 1 seed SimonaHale­p 6-1, 6-2 at the French Open on Sunday in Paris.

The 54th-ranked Swiatek, a 19year-old from Poland, advanced to her first Grand Slam quarterfin­al after ending Halep’s 17-match winning streak,.

“Nobody surprises anybody anymore,” said two-time major championHa­lep, who had to be taken aback at least a tad, considerin­g she defeated Swiatek 6-1, 6-0 in 45 minutes a year ago in Paris.

Swiatek will face, Martina Trevisan, a 26-year-old from Florence, Italy, who beat No. 5 seed Kiki Bertens 6-4, 6-4.

In the men’s draw, defending champ and No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal overwhelme­d qualifier Sebastian Korda 6-1, 6-1, 6-2. U.S. Open champ and No. 3 seed Dominic Thiem held off French wild-card entry Hugo Gaston 6-4, 6-4, 5-7, 3-6, 6-3, while U.S. Open runner-up Alexander Zverev lost 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to 19-year-old Jannik Sinner of Italy.

College football: Wisconsin starting QB Jack Coan will undergo surgery and miss at least several week after suffering a foot injury at practice Saturday. The Badgers open the season Oct. 24 at home against Illinois. Coan, a senior, completed a team-record 236 passes for 2,727 yards with 18 TDs and five INTs last season while helping leadWiscon­sin to the Big TenWest title and a Rose Bowl appearance.

Soccer: Ollie Watkins scored a hat trick and Jack Grealish added two goals to lead host Aston Villa to a shocking 7-2 upset of defending Premier League champ Liverpool. It wasmost lopsided loss in 67 years for a reigning league champ and it was Liverpool’s worst loss in 57 years. In other EPL action, Manchester United fell to visitingTo­tteham 6-1. ... Visitor Sevilla held La Liga powerhouse Barcelona to a 1-1 draw.
