Chargers name QB Herbert permanent starter
Anthony Lynn has taken the temporary starter tag off rookieQB Justin Herbert.
The Chargers coach on Thursday named Herbert as the starter for the rest of the season, beginning with Monday night’s game against the Saints inNewOrleans.
Tyrod Taylor suffered a rib injury during a Week 1 victory and then suffered a punctured lung while receiving a pain-killing injection before the Chargers’ Sept. 20 game against the Chiefs.
Herbert, the No. 6 overall pick, has fiveTDpassesandthreeINTs in three losses.
■ CowboysLTTyronSmithmay miss the rest of the season because of a neck injury, ESPN reported. The 29-year-old seven-time Pro Bowler returned from a two-game injury absence Sunday but suffered a setback. ... Ravens QB Lamar Jackson missed his second straight practice because of a knee injury, but ESPN reported that the team doesn’t believe the reigning MVP’s injury is serious.
College football: Kansas coach Les Miles tested positive for COVID-19 and is quarantining in his home, where he plans to fulfill his coaching responsibilities remotely as the Jayhawks spend a week off before visiting West Virginia. So far, Miles, 66, hadn’t developed symptoms.
Golf: Brittany Lincicome and Kelly Tan each shot 3-under 67 to share a one-stroke lead at the Women’s PGA Championship in Newton Square, Pa.
Danielle Kang, Lydia Ko, Gabby Lopez, Carlota Ciganda, Linnea Strom and Cydney Clanton were a stroke back at the major. Lincicome, 35, is trying to win for the first since having a baby in July 2019.
NHL: The Blackhawks will not resign longtime goaltender Corey Crawford in free agency. Crawford, 35, spent the first 13 seasons of his career with the Blackhawks, winning two Stanley Cup championships. ... Hurricanes forward Justin Williams retired after 19 seasons and three Cup championships. Williams, 39, won his first Cup in 2006 with theHurricanes and then added two titles with the Kings, winning playoff MVP honors in 2014. He returned to the Hurricanes for the 2017-18 season. Williams also playedfor the FlyersandCapitals.
