Enos added to bolster the staff on offense

- By Edward Lee

Maryland football coach Mike Locksley announced Monday a few changes to his coaching staff.

Dan Enos was hired as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, and Brian Braswell will serve as the offensive line coach. Defensive line coach Brian Williams has been promoted to co- defensive coordinator, working in conjunction with JonHoke.

Enos was the associate head coach and running backs coach at Cincinnati, which went 9- 0, earned theNo. 8 ranking in the final College

Football Playoff poll and captured the American Athletic Conference championship before losing toNo. 9Georgia, 24- 21, in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day. Under Enos, the offense averaged 37.5 points and 212.4 rushing yards per game.

Enos also has worked with Locksley, serving as the associate head coach and quarterbacks coach at Alabama in 2018 when the latter was the offensive coordinator. With Enos, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa completed 69% of his passes, threw for 3,966 yards with 43 touchdowns and only six interceptions and set an all- time NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision single- season passer rating mark of 199.4.

“Dan has a tremendous track record as one of the top quarterback developers in the country,” Locksley in a statement distributed by the Terps. “He played a significant role in the growth of Brandon and Austin Allen at Arkansas, and Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa andMac Jones at Alabama. We worked together seamlessly on the same staff in 2018 and because of Dan’s familiarity with our system, I expect a smooth transition as we continue to develop the talent on our roster and take the next steps as a program.”

“I’m excited to be at the University of Maryland and grateful to Mike Locksley and the athletic department for this opportunity,” said Enos, who compiled a 26- 36 record as the head coach at Central Michigan from 2010 to 2014. “Mike and I worked extremely well together in 2018 and put up some impressive numbers as an offensive staff. That level of success using an up- tempo offense is the goal here, and I look forward toworking ” toward it, starting in 2021.”

Enos, who also coached at Michigan, Miami andArkansas, will be tasked with shaping sophomore quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, who finished the regular season ranked third in the Big Ten in passing yards per game ( 252.8) and fourth in completion percentage (. 615). Tua Tagovailoa expressed faith in Enos’ ability to aid his younger brother’s growth.

“Coach Enos is a very detail oriented coach so he’ll expect a lot out of his players and position group,” said Tagovailoa, who recently completed his rookie season with the Miami Dolphins after being drafted No. 5 overall. “I think he’ll help my brother develop to become the best version of a football player hewants to be, but more importantly help the entire team in that sense. I had a great relationship with him at Alabama so I think it’s a great hire forMaryland.”

Braswell spent five years in the NFL, working for the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals from 2014 to 2018. This past season, he worked as a volunteer analyst forMaryland, focusing on the offensive line.

“Brian is a very technical offensive line coach that will bring strong knowledge of the position to the room,” Locksley said. “He is very familiar with our system and our players as he served as a volunteer analyst with us last year. Having spent the majority of his career as an NFL assistant, Brian knows howto develop players to succeed at the next level. He’ll be a tremendous asset to our players and a great addition to our coaching staff.”

Williams molded a defensive line that contributed to the defense ranking second in the Big Ten in sacks per game ( 2.8). He also was ranked as the top recruiter in the conference and theNo. 5 recruiter nationally, by 247 Sports.

“BrianWilliams continues to develop into a strong young coach,” Locksley said. “He adds tremendous value to our program and the sky’s the limit for him as a coach.”

The announcement made official reports over the weekend that team was moving on from offensive coordinator Scottie Montgomery and offensive line coach John Reagan.

Montgomery and Reagan were original members of Locksley’s staff formed prior to the start of the 2019 season. In 2019, the Terps ranked 11th of 14 teams in the Big Ten in scoring, seventh in rushing and 12th in passing. In an abbreviated 2020 campaign in which Maryland finished 2- 3, the offense ranked11th again in scoring ( 23.6) and ninth in rushing ( 145.0), but improved to third in passing ( 264.0).
