NASCAR CUP SERIES Las Vegas Motor Speedway is the scene today as the NASCAR Cup series rolls into its fourth week with the Pennzoil 400. A field including Kevin Harvick, Joey Logano, Kurt Busch, Brad Keselowski and Martin Truex Jr. will do battle on the 1.5-mile tri-oval superspeedway. 26TH ANNUAL CRITICS’ CHOICE AWARDS A pair of Netflix streaming dramas, “The Crown” and “Ozark,” lead the field of TV nominees with six nominations each as Taye Diggs makes his third consecutive appearance as host of this year’s awards ceremonies. TV shows earning at least five nods include HBO’s “Lovecraft Country,” “Schitt’s Creek” and “What We Do in the Shadows.” The Netflix biopic “Mank” dominates the film categories with 12 nods, followed by “Minari” with 10 and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” with eight. TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS Guy Fieri returns as host for a new season of this bracket-style culinary competition series wherein 16 of the best chefs from the East and West Coasts go head-to-head in sudden death cooking battles. Chefs representing the East Coast include Madison Cowan, Maneet Chauhan, Darnell Ferguson, Amanda Freitag, Marc Murphy and Bryan Voltaggio; West Coast chefs include Cat Cora, Antonia Lofaso, Brian Malarkey, Jet Tila, Michael Voltaggio and last year’s winner, Brooke Williamson. “DESPERATE WIDOWS” A recent widow takes several members of her family to check out a commune designed to offer grieving women a shot at a new beginning in this 2021 drama. Once at this “Mommune,” however, she discovers to her horror the operation is a front for a black market human trafficking ring, and the widow and her daughter will become the next victims unless they find a way to escape. 2021 NBA ALL-STAR GAME A weekendlong celebration in years past, the NBA All-Star Game and related events will be condensed into one day thanks to pandemic restrictions when festivities get underway at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Also new to this year’s exhibition contest is the “Elam Ending,” where the game ends and a winner is declared when one team reaches a predetermined points total.
