Police welfare check ends in fatal shooting

County officer responding to call shoots armed man, police say

- By Lilly Price

An Anne Arundel County police officer fatally shot a man in Pasadena Thursday while responding to a call for a welfare check, a police spokesperson said.

Two officers arrived at 11:03 a.m. at the 7800 block of Bodkin View Drive in the Bayside Beach community after receiving a call from a mental health facility employee who reported the man was suicidal, said Sgt. Kam Cooke, police spokesperson.

Officers were unable to make contact with the man at the door and entered the two-story house. Officers “encountered a man with a handgun” inside the house, Cooke said. An officer shot the man in the upper body, and he died at the scene.

Officers rendered first aid until the fire department arrived on the scene. The man was alone in the house.

Police were trying to contact the man’s family, who was described as a white adult male, and the investigation continued into Thursday afternoon. Police said they were not identifying the man until the family had been notified.

Police did not yet know if the man owned the house that sat in a quiet neighborhood among a mix of older ramblers and new threestory waterfront homes steps away from the Patapsco River.

There have been other shootings in the county involving officers in the past few years.

In 2017, Anne Arundel police

and members of the FBI shot a man in Linthicum after an hours-long standoff responding to a domestic disturbance call.

On Nov. 5, 2018, officers arrived at 5 a.m. to a Ferndale home to serve an extreme risk protective order and confiscate the man’s guns. Gary Willis answered the door wielding a Smith & Wesson .357 magnum. He would later struggle with an officer over the gun, causing it to fire. He was then shot five times.

Another man was wielding a knife on a shoulder of U.S. Route 50 in June 2019 when he was shot by a county officer. Police said the man pulled out a knife and lunged toward the emergency responders. He was sent to the hospital with critical injuries and later died.

Another man ran around a car and charged police with a knife in Cape St. Claire in May 2020. An officer fired several rounds and the man was taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
