One man was killed in a shooting Saturday night on Newtowne Drive, Annapolis police said.

Around 7:33 p.m., officers responded to the 700 block of Newtowne Drive for a report of a shooting. they found an adult male suffering from gunshot wounds.

The victim, who police have not identified, was taken to an area hospital where he died from his injuries.

Annapolis police declined to comment Sunday, after releasing a brief statement on the death.

Police asked that anyone with information about the homicide contact detectives at 410-260-3439. To remain anonymous, call Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP.

Alderwoman Sheila Finlayson, whose Ward 4 includes Newtowne Drive, has asked to send crisis response units to the Woodside Gardens apartment complex in the same block where the shooting took place.

She wants them to help with the trauma and crime that has been increasing. Finlayson will be speaking to the owner of the complex.

It was at least the second outbreak of gun violence in the same neighborhood in two weeks.

“We are going to have to get a handle on the people that are in the community that doesn’t belong there. I believe they are the ones causing the problems,” Finlayson said.

On March 23, Annapolis police charged an 18-year-old man with attempted murder Tuesday after a shooting and a possible robbery on Newtowne Drive. Kamal Davis, of Annapolis, was arrested after a man was injured in a suspected robbery shortly before 7 p.m.

Finlayson doesn’t know why there has been an increase in crime, but she thinks there are more guns on the street.

“People are desperate. We aren’t doing enough to get people employed,” she said. “We got to get a better handle on getting the bad apples off our street, whatever that takes.”

Finlayson is working to get a training program into Annapolis to give residents an opportunity to make a living.

The Housing Authority of the City of Annapolis is currently rebuilding its apartment complex on Newtowne Drive, Newtowne 20. After demolishing the old buildings late last year, construction began in March.

When completed next year, it is expected to include a new community building and open space.
