Hat tricks from Frawley, McIntyre drive UMBC past UMass-Lowell

UMBC attackmen Ryan Frawley and Brett McIntyre scored three goals apiece in their final regular-season game at UMBC Stadium, leading the Retrievers to a conference 12-7 win over UMass-Lowell in men’s college lacrosse Saturday.

UMBC (6-2, 5-2 America East) is still in the hunt for a conference playoff berth. UMass-Lowell fell to 1-7, 1-6.

The Retrievers took advantage of a quick start, scoring three times in the first 2 minutes, 57 seconds. Frawley, a fifth-year senior, tallied just 1:27 into the game, and after an exchange of goals, McIntyre, a graduate student, came from behind the cage and beat UML netminder Max Christides to give the hosts a 3-1 lead.

Frawley would complete his hat trick by scoring the final goal of the first quarter and adding a man-up tally just 12 seconds into the second to provide UMBC with a 5-1 advantage.

UMBC long-stick defensive midfielder Colin Kasner led a balanced effort with five ground balls and added a game-high three caused turnovers.

UMBC moved into sole possession of third place in the league race, one-half game behind Vermont and one-half game ahead of Albany, who were both idle this weekend.

The Retrievers face a rematch with first-place Stony Brook on April 24 on Long Island. UMBC handed Stony Brook (8-3, 6-1) its lone conference setback of the season, 13-12 in four overtimes on March 6.

No. 8 Rutgers 17, Johns Hopkins 11: Adam Charalambides had six goals and two assists to lead the host Scarlet Knights (7-2, 7-2 Big Ten) over the Blue Jays (2-7, 2-7).

Hopkins tied the game 11-11 late in the third quarter before Charalambides scored a natural hat trick over a span of 1:45 in the final two minutes to put Rutgers ahead for good. Cole Williams (Loyola Blakefield) had four goals and an assist, and Joey Epstein had two goals and two assists for the Blue Jays,

Hopkins hosts No. 1 Maryland at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the regular-season finale.

Towson 9, Massachusetts 6: The Tigers (6-6, 3-3 Colonial Athletic Association) scored all nine goals in the first half and held on to win. The Minutemen (3-4, 3-3) were held to two goals in the second half.

Ryan Swain (Calvert Hall) had a hat trick and Shane Brennan made 13 saves for Towson.

Long Island 17, Mount St. Mary’s 15: Jake Gillis scored the first two goals of a 7-0 run that spanned the third and fourth quarters, and the Sharks (6-2, 5-1 Northeast Conference) pulled away from the Mount (3-9, 1-5). The game featured five ties.

Gillis finished with four goals and Richie LaCalandra had a game-high six goals for Long Island. Luke Frankeny scored five goals and Matt Haggerty had a hat trick for Mount St. Mary’s.

Muhlenberg 13, McDaniel 3: Brighton Lorber (Loyola Blakefield) made 18 saves, but the host Green Terror (0-4, 0-4 Centennial Conference) fell to the Mules (2-3, 2-1). Muhlenberg opened with an 11-0 run and cruised. Goal scorers for McDaniel included Jackson Kratovil, Micah Brooks and Dom Calderoni.

Franklin & Marshall 12, Washington College 5: The visiting Diplomats (4-0, 3-0 Centennial Conference) broke a 4-4 tie with a 5-0 run to start the second half and beat the Shoremen (2-3, 1-2). Chris Del Rosario made 16 saves for Washington College, which hosts Gettysburg on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Frostburg State at Mercy, ppd.: The game between the visiting Bobcats (5-1, 1-0 East Coast Conference) and Mavericks (6-0, 1-0) has been postponed. No makeup date has been announced yet. Frostburg State will host Davis & Elkins on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Salisbury at St. Mary’s, ppd.: The game between the Sea Gulls (9-1, 5-0 Coast to Coast Conference) and host Seahawks (3-7, 1-3) has been postponed. No makeup date has been announced yet.

St. Mary’s will host Mary Washington on Wednesday at 5 p.m., and Salisbury will travel to Mary Washington on Saturday at 1 p.m.
