Recognizing teachers

-

Enough is enough. When only two teachers are named Teacher of the Year, one each for public and independent schools respectively, why is one of those teachers on the front page and the other is buried in the last two paragraphs of a lengthy article on page 9 (The Capital, April 16)?

For years I have observed a negative slight of St. Mary’s sports coverage in your narrative and lack of pictorial coverage. In this day of frustration towards the press, from all sides, I expect more from our beloved hometown paper.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I expect the level of journalism at The Capital to fairly, and equally, cover all of the schools they report on without bias.

I extend a heartfelt congratulations to Jing Dai for being named Anne Arundel County Public Schools 2021 Teacher of the Year on Thursday night. St. Mary’s High School teacher Myles Healy deserves the same accolades and respect for being named the Independent Schools 2021 Teacher of the Year.

Since you did not afford him the same level of detail please allow me to do so.

Healy is the kind of teacher a parent can only hope their child is fortunate enough to have as a student as have all three of my grown children. His breadth of knowledge, coupled with his ability to connect with students, is truly unique as he combines his innate humor with his expectation of excellence. Healy’s support of the students and St. Mary’s community extends far past the classroom onto the playing fields where you can enjoy him colorfully announcing home games.

These are just a few of the many reasons Mr. Healy is so deserving of this award. To quote Healy, he truly is, “...living the dream!”
