Bruins beat Mount de Sales 4-0

Broadneck field hockey opens with two wins in tourney

Broadneck hosted its own opening-weekend tournament Saturday and took care of business with a pair of shutout victories.

The Bruins began with a 4-0 win over Mount de Sales and then followed it up with a 1-0 triumph over River Hill.

Against Mount de Sales, Arden Hunteman opened up the scoring for the Bruins (2-0) on an assist from Mady Quigley. Maya Everett followed up with a hat trick, with one of those goals being assisted from Ella Killian. Chloe Rand registered five saves in goal to earn the shutout. In the nightcap against River Hill, Chloe Page scored her first goal as a Bruin on an assist from Hunteman. Safiya Stimely tallied a key defensive safe and goalie Rand had five saves to maintain a shutout.

Broadneck is back in action on Sept. 13, as it opens up county play with a home matchup against South River.

Field hockey

South River 6, Westminste­r 1: Elsa Emling scored two goals and added an assist to pace the Seahawks’ offense in their season-opening win. Katherine Wanner (goal, assist), Kelly Webber (goal, assist), Sophie Waugh and Kendall Simpson accounted for the team’s other scores, while Maddie Kandra (two assists) and Gigi Stephan (assist) helped out offensivel­y as well.

Westminste­r’s goal was scored by Jess Kent off an assist from Bridget Sheehy.

Anna Tippett made eight saves for the Owls, while goalies Lily Kerr and Rae Beall (one save) combined to allow just the one goal for South River.

Century 2, Southern 2: Southern got its two goals from Kylie Durkin and Ava Wooster, while both Century goals were scored by Ella Morris.

Boys soccer

Broadneck 8, Calvert Hall 0: The Bruins opened their season with a convincing victory, as seven different players scored goals. Mikey Johnson scored twice to lead the way, while Jeremiah Rodriguez (three assists) and Tanner Boone (two assists) each had multiple assists. Single goals for Broadneck were scored by Justin Henschen, Aiden Vanderbilt, Riley Erbe, Jaden Smith, Hektor Thompson and Dylan Thompson.

Griffin Bodziak and Jackson Shaw each made one save at goalie for Broadneck, which led 3-0 at halftime.

Broadneck 9, North Caroline 0: It was a second straight shutout in tournament play for the Bruins, as Mikey Johnson and Dylan Thompson each scored two goals. Caden Terrelonge added two assists. Broadneck, which got a save apiece from Matt Tettemer and Jackson Shaw, led 6-0 at halftime.

South River 3, Northern 0: After Northern picked up a very early red card, RJ Eubanks opened up the scoring for the Seahawks off a rebound. Quade Blazevich scored a second before the half after a great individual effort. Konrad Niwa wrapped up the scoring in the second half. Jay Jenkins made two saves for South River.

Football

Chesapeake 61, Western Tech 0: The Cougars sprinted out to a 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter, getting early rushing scores from Dylan Lewis, Victor Listorti and Logan Clark, and never slowed down the rest of the way on Saturday night. Listorti later added another touchdown on a punt return, while Rushaun Tongue added a pair of scores of his own — one receiving and one by returning the opening kickoff of the second half for a touchdown.

Severna Park 45, Meade 0: The Falcons built a 38-0 lead by halftime and cruised to the win Saturday night. James Henson III and Kevin Bredeck each scored multiple touchdowns in the victory.

Annapolis 37, High Point 0 (Friday): Annapolis wasted little time setting the tone in its season-opening game visiting High Point, scoring 21 points in the first quarter on the way to an eventual 37-0 victory.

Jermaine Hunt led the offensive effort with 101 yards on eight carries to go along with three rushing touchdowns. Ke’Mari Taylor added 38 yards rushing and two touchdowns of his own, including one on a 48-yard punt return.

Defensivel­y, Trenton Player and Messiah Rodriguez each made tackles for loss in the shutout effort.

St. Mary’s 14, Loyola Blakfield 12 (Friday): St. Mary’s running back Wyatt Cotton rushed for 242 yards, while quarterbac­k Rocco Abdinoor threw for 43 in the two-point victory.

Laurel 42, Crofton 8 (Friday): Crofton scored its touchdown in the second quarter, as Le’Trell Bender caught a 31-yard pass from Ian Lenkart. Paeton Norsworthy then ran in the two-point conversion. Lenkart finished the day with eight completion­s for 91 yards and the touchdown.

Arundel 28, Dover 27 OT (Friday): Gavin Kamachi completed a pass to Clinton Mills for a 9-yard touchdown in overtime and then Hunter Green added the two-point conversion for the deciding points in the game to lift Arundel to the win.

Old Mill 59, North County 0 (Friday): Timothy Tripplett kicked off the scoring in the first quarter with an 82-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and Old Mill never looked back, building a 26-0 lead by halftime.

Quarterbac­k Myles Fulton completed nine passes for 230 yards and four touchdowns, while also adding 35 yards rushing. Three of his touchdown passes went to Donte Craggette-Drake (6 catches, 165 yards) and the other went to William Ennis (3 catches, 50 yards). Anthony Taylor paced Old Mill on the ground with 13 carries for 63 yards and two touchdowns. In addition to the offensive scores, Old Mill also got an intercepti­on for a score by Jerrel Howard and a fumble recovery for a touchdown by Trevion King Rankin.

Girls soccer

Severn 5, Sparrows Point 0 (Friday): In a private against public school matchup, Alina Valencia (two goals, assist) led the way offensivel­y for the Admirals. Melissa Mazuranic (goal, assist), Elliot Wienk (goal, assist), Abby Witzel (goal) and Skyler Morton (assist) all were contributo­rs on the stat sheet as well. Goalie Zoee Stencil made two saves.

Volleyball

Broadneck def. Martinsbur­g (WV) — 3-0 [25-16, 25-14, 25-20]: In the season-opening win the Bruins (1-0) were led by Natalie Luscomb (15 kills, 3 blocks, 10 service points), Bella Rubino (8 kills), Bryce Payne (21 service points) and Madeline Stewart (30 assists, 12 service points).

Crofton def. Bowie — 3-0 [25-6, 25-17, 25-12]: Christine Wang led the Cardinals in serving (23-24, 10 aces] and also added 27 assists. Cora Schaffer (13-13 serving, 9 kills, 3 blocks) also had a strong all-around effort for Crofton, while Lily Lagaras and Emily Gustie added double-digit kills as well.
