Robert G. Morrice
On September 18, 2021, Robert passed peacefully at his home surrounded by family. Born October 17, 1928, in Hackensack, NJ. Mr. Morrice graduated from high school in Rutherford, NJ in 1946 and from Benjamin Franklin University, Washington DC in 1951 with an Accounting degree.
He was married to JoAnn B. Morrice on June 12, 1954. They have two daughters and have resided in Severna Park, MD since 1961.
He was the son of the late Oliver W. Sr and Emma S. Morrice and was predeceased by an older brother, Oliver W. Jr.
Mr. Morrice served in the U.S. Army from March 1951 to November 1956, with assignments at several stateside locations and then for two years in Japan as a Counterintelligence Agent. Following release from active duty, he continued his service in the Army Reserve retiring in 1968 as a Major in Military Intelligence.
Mr. Morrice had a long and distinguished civilian career in the US Government which began in 1948 as a fingerprint technician with the FBI. This civilian employment was interrupted by military service from 1951 to 1956, but resumed with employment by the Naval Investigative Service in Washington, DC as a Special Agent in 1957. During the next 15 years, he served in various positions including, Senior Resident Agent at the US Naval Academy (1961-1968), Supervising Agent in the South Vietnam (1968-1969), and Senior Resident Agent at Andrews Airforce Base (1970-1972).
From 1972 to 1976, he served in the newly established Defense Investigative Service as Special Agent in charge of the Baltimore Field Office and later as Assistant Regional Director in Kansas City, MO.
In 1976, Mr. Morrice transferred to a newly established office in the Department of Defense, Inspector General for Defense Intelligence. This office was responsible for oversight of all intelligence and counterintelligence activities of the DOD worldwide. He served as the Chief of Investigations and Inspections and later as the Deputy Inspector General. In 1984 he retired as Deputy Assistant to the Secretary of Defense (Intelligence Oversight). He was awarded the Secretary of Defense Medal for Meritorious Civilian Service.
After retiring from the Defense Department, he was self employed for eight years as an independent contractor conducting background investigations for another government intelligence agency.
In addition to his wife of 67 years, he is survived by his two daughters, Suzanne O. Phipps of Davidsonville, MD and Michelle G. Morrice of Pasadena, MD; one brother, Donald E. Morrice of Cedar Grove, NJ; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren.
Robert G. Morrice will be laid to rest with honors on Friday, September 24th at 1:00pm at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Crownsville, MD. Online condolences may be made on
