Rihanna pledges climate justice aid
Rihanna is backing her belief that climate change is a social justice issue by pledging $15 million to the movement through her Clara Lionel Foundation.
The singer Tuesday announced the donation to 18 climate justice organizations doing work in seven Caribbean nations and the U.S., including the Climate Justice Alliance, the Indigenous Environmental Network, and the Movement for Black Lives.
“Climate disasters, which are growing in frequency and intensity, do not impact all communities equally, with communities of color and island nations facing the brunt of climate change,” Rihanna said in a statement, adding that is the reason her foundation prioritizes both climate resilience and climate justice work.
The grants, made in partnership with Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey’s #StartSmall philanthropic initiative, are focused on groups with female, LGBT, and Black and Indigenous leaders because their communities are at the greatest risk.
Schneider sets another ‘Jeopardy!’ record:
“Jeopardy!” champion Amy Schneider has officially achieved the second longest winning streak in the quiz show’s history.
On Monday, the software engineering manager from Oakland, California, won her 39th straight game, besting previous runner-up Matt Amodio’s 38-day record. So far, no one has come close to catching current “Jeopardy!” host Ken Jennings, who notched 74 consecutive victories as a contestant in 2004.
By the end of Monday’s episode, Schneider had amassed $1.32 million on the show — the fifth highest total ever, including tournament winnings. And she hasn’t even participated in a tournament yet.
During her “Jeopardy!” stint, Schneider has blazed a trail by winning more games than any other woman and transgender person to appear on the quiz show.
Dylan sells recorded music catalog:
Sony Music Entertainment announced Monday that it had purchased the rights to all music recorded by Bob Dylan. That acquisition of his recordings, which date back 60 years, also includes “the rights to multiple future releases,” Sony said in a news release.
Sony gave no dollar amount in Monday’s announcement. Estimates put the value of publishing rights to his more than 600 song catalog at around $300 million. The rock and folk star, 80, sold publishing rights to his extensive catalog to Universal Music in December 2020.
Designer Mugler dies:
French fashion designer Manfred Thierry Mugler, 73, whose dramatic designs were worn by celebrities such as Madonna, Lady Gaga and Cardi B, has died. He died Sunday, according to his official Instagram account. The post did not give a cause of death.
Mugler, who launched his brand in 1973, became known for his architectural style, defined by broad shoulders and a tiny waist. The use of plastic-like futuristic fabric in his sculpted clothing became a trademark.
