Yeoh is Time’s ’22 Icon of the Year

-

Time magazine named Michelle Yeoh its 2022 Icon of the Year on Tuesday, highlighting her storied 40-year acting career that includes this year’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

Yeoh is a favorite for an Oscar nomination for her performance in the well-received surreal action-drama. She had been named to Time’s 100 Most Influential People of 2022 list earlier this year.

During her career, Yeoh told Time that she had to “battle” a Hollywood that offered her parts that were stereotypes of Asians or harmful tropes of Asian women.

“It shouldn’t be about my race, but it has been a battle,” Yeoh said. “At least let me try.”

Years before landing her first Hollywood role, Yeoh, 60, was already a movie icon in Asia. She had starred in popular Hong Kong action films throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, becoming famous for doing her own stunts.

It wasn’t until this last year that Hollywood began to recognize her as a top-billed actor, seen for her acting abilities beyond what white audiences expect of Asian performers. In “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” she starred as Evelyn Quan Wang, the universe-jumping owner of a struggling laundromat.

Yeoh said she feels the gravity of possibly winning a Oscar. She would be the first Asian woman to win the lead actress award.

“I’ve thought about it,” Yeoh said. “And not just me — I feel like my full Asian community has thought about it. They come up to me and they say, ‘You’re doing it for us.’ ”

‘Daily Show’ names guest hosts:

“The Daily Show” has yet to hire a permanent replacement for outgoing host Trevor Noah. But Comedy Central has recruited some big names to helm the late-night program in the interim.

On Tuesday, the network announced that Al Franken, Chelsea Handler, D.L. Hughley, Leslie Jones, John Leguizamo, Hasan Minhaj, Kal Penn, Sarah Silverman, Wanda Sykes and Marlon Wayans will serve as rotating guest hosts of “The Daily Show” starting Jan. 17. Noah’s final episode is Thursday.

2 Chainz hosts concert series:

2 Chainz wants to capitalize off the NFL’s huge “Thursday Night Football” platform to feature some of the world’s most popular musical performers on Amazon Music’s live concert series.

The Grammy winner is the host of “Amazon Music Live,” a weekly live show that streams on Prime Video after “Thursday Night Football.” It is filmed each week in front of a live audience in Los Angeles. The concert series, which debuted in late October with guest Lil Baby, has also featured Megan Thee Stallion and Kane Brown.

Rapper A$AP Rocky will hit the stage Thursday, and Brazilian singer Anitta is expected to perform next week.

“This is a huge benefit for artists who are able to access one of the biggest platforms on TV, with ‘Thursday Night Football’ having so many viewers, coming on after the game,” 2 Chainz said.
