Navy 2023 football schedule finalized

- By Bill Wagner

Navy’s 2023 football schedule was finalized Tuesday when the American Athletic Conference released dates for all of its games.

Navy had previously announced its nonconference contests versus Notre Dame in Dublin, Ireland, on Aug. 26 and against Wagner on Sept. 9 in Annapolis along with the service academy matchups against Air Force and Army.

The Midshipmen, under first-year coach Brian Newberry, will play six home games, four road games and two neutral site contests.

This coming season marks the debut of the AAC as a 14-team league. Commissioner Mike Aresco revamped the American in the wake of Central Florida, Cincinnati and Houston leaving for the Big 12 Conference.

In November, the American announced its scheduling model for the 2023 through 2026 seasons. Navy knew at that time it would be playing North Texas, University of Alabama at Birmingham, South Florida and East Carolina at home along with SMU, Memphis, Charlotte and Temple on the road.

Dates for those games were released Tuesday with Navy opening conference action with a Thursday night (Sept. 14) prime-time game against Memphis in the Liberty Bowl. Navy’s AAC home opener will be held Saturday,

Sept. 30, versus South Florida.

Because of changes in the AAC scheduling model, Navy will not meet Air Force on the first or second Saturday of October as it usually does. That game, the opening leg of the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy series, will be played Oct. 21 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

It marks the latest Navy-Air Force game since 1974, when it was played Oct. 19.

Senior Day in Annapolis will be celebrated on Saturday, Nov. 18, with East Carolina coming to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The Pirates spoiled the final home game for the Midshipmen during the 2021 season.

Navy’s final AAC game will be against SMU at Ford Stadium in Dallas. As always, the regular season closes with the Army-Navy game, being held Saturday, Dec. 9 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Kickoff times will be announced at a later date.
