US routs Cuba, earns berth in final of WBC

Trea Turner homered twice to give him a tournament-leading four, and the defending champion United States romped over Cuba 14-2 on Sunday night in Miami to reach its second straight World Baseball Classic final.

Paul Goldschmid­t and Cedric Mullins also homered for the U.S., which scored in seven of eight innings.

Turner and Goldschmid­t each had four RBIs.

The U.S. plays Japan or Mexico in Tuesday night’s championsh­ip.

Japan and Mexico faced off Monday night but the game ended too late for this edition.

College basketball: Georgetown hired Ed Cooley as its new coach. Cooley, 53, resigned earlier in the day as coach of Big East rival Providence after going 242-153 and making seven NCAA Tournament appearance­s in 12 seasons. He replaces Patrick Ewing, who was fired earlier this month after going 75-109 in six seasons.

NBA: Hornets G LaMelo Ball said he anticipate­s being ready for training camp in September after suffering through an injury-plagued 2022-23 season in which he sprained his left ankle three times and fractured his right ankle, all of which limited him to 36 games. Ball, 21, had season-ending surgery on March 1.

NFL: NBA great Magic Johnson has joined Josh Harris’ bid to buy the Commanders. Johnson is already involved in sports ownership with stakes in the MLB’s Dodgers, WNBA’s Sparks and Los Angeles F.C. of the MLS. Amid multiple investigat­ions, longtime Commanders owner Dan Snyder and wife Tanya began exploring selling part or all of the team in the fall. ... The Texans agreed to one-year free agent deals with TE Dalton Schultz and RB Devin Singletary, ESPN reported. Schultz, 26, spent the first five seasons of his career with the Cowboys, while Singletary, 25, spent the first four seasons of his career with the Bills.
