Officer charged with assault

Corporal allegedly threatened to kill woman and child

- By Luke Parker

An Anne Arundel County Police officer charged with second-degree assault Saturday and suspended with pay had confronted the father of her unborn child and threatened to kill his other child and its mother, according to charging documents.

Witnesses told responding officers that Rachel Daniel, a county police corporal, had made the threats as she attempted to push past her partner and enter his home in Pasadena.

Daniel, who is eight months pregnant, arrived at the house Saturday approximately 9 a.m., according to charging documents. A neighbor’s security footage showed the man meeting and speaking with her outside his fence. Soon, however, the man had wrapped his arms around Daniel in what police described as a “bear hug” to prevent her from entering his house.

Neighbors told police they had seen Daniel “pound” on the man’s door for 10 minutes before the man came outside, according to charging documents.

When he did, Daniel threatened to enter the house and fight a woman with whom he has a child. According to charging documents, Daniel said, “I’m going to kill her and the child,” and “I will go in that house, pick her up and throw her through the window. I will kill her.”

By the time police arrived, Daniel and the man had separated and were having a conversation, according to charging documents. The police corporal described the interaction as “a normal relationship argument.”

The Anne Arundel County Police Department announced Daniel’s suspension later that day, saying it stemmed from “the officer’s involvement in an off-duty, domestic-related incident.” An internal investigation is ongoing, police said.

The department did not provide Daniel’s full name, describing her as Cpl. R. Daniel, an eight-year officer in the department’s Bureau of Administration.

A police corporal named Rachel Leslie Daniel made a salary of more than $79,000 in fiscal 2023, according to Anne Arundel County employee records.

Daniel does not have an attorney listed in online court records. A hearing has yet to be scheduled in the case.
