Houston tops AP poll for 1st time this season

Now it is Houston’s turn at the top of The Associated Press Top 25 men’s college basketball poll.

The Cougars moved to No. 1 for the first time this season in Monday’s latest poll, climbing one spot to end the six-week stay of reigning national champion Connecticu­t. Houston (24-3) became the fifth team to hold the top spot this season.

Purdue rose one spot to No. 2, while the Huskies’ loss to Creighton dropped them to third.

Kelvin Sampson’s Cougars spent seven weeks at No. 1 last year.

Duke C Kyle Filipowski avoided major injury but was still “a little bit sore,” two days after a collision with a fan left him hobbled during a court-storming incident following the Blue Devils’ loss to Wake Forest on Saturday. His status isn’t clear for Wednesday’s game against Louisville.

Baseball: The Twins acquired OF Manuel Margot, minor league SS Rayne Doncon and cash from the Dodgers for minor league SS Noah Miller. The MAC presidents voted to invite the University of Massachuse­tts, which will join the MAC in all applicable sports for the 202526 school year, ESPN reported. The hockey program will remain in the Hockey East as the MAC doesn’t have a hockey league.

Colleges:

Reigning league MVP Breanna Stewart re-signed with the Liberty. ESPN reported that the deal is a one-year, non-guaranteed pact, and below the player maximum salary. The Liberty designated Stewart, 29, under the core rule in the offseason, retaining her exclusive negotiatio­n rights.
