Heritage ends season with Buford

Heritage baseball coach Eric Beagles said Buford was everything the Generals expected and more.

The Navy-and-Red ended their season on Friday in first round of the Class AAAA State Playoffs after being swept, 10-0 and 8-1.

Beagles said it was disappoint­ing end to a good season.

“We got what we expected,” he said. “We got two quality games and had to face two quality arms. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a team with a one-two punch as good as those guys were.”

Jake Higginboth­am got it done on the mound on the way to a winning game one. He tossed five innings of shutout ball while striking out 10, walking one and allowing one hit.

Conner Bennett was lights out in game two. He went the distance while striking out 14 batters, walking one and giving up four hits.

Beagles said he was proud of his Generals for putting together a small comeback in game two, where Bennett allowed his first earned run of the season. The lone run of the ballgame came in the sixth inning on an RBI-double by Logan Haga.

“That kid hasn’t given up an earned run all year,” he said. “It was good to be able to get to do that.”

Beagles said he was extremely proud of his team for never giving up and earning a berth to the state playoffs after falling one win short of post season play last year.

“I’m really proud of our team because it was a dawning task with Buford, but those are hands you’re dealt with when you finish as the region’s No. 4 seed.”
