Catoosa County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is offering its next class in disaster preparedne­ss and volunteer community disaster response.

The class is TWO sessions Saturdays, June 18 and 25, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Both classes are needed to complete the training and earn the certificat­e. Course and training manual are free. Participan­ts will learn about disaster preparedne­ss for the home, disaster psychology, disaster first aid, light search and rescue and other topics. YMCA will offer swim lessons at the LaFayette City Pool

this summer for boys and girls ages 6 months – 17 years old. Classes are taught by trained swim instructor­s and supervised by a certified lifeguard. Students in the class will have the ability to test their skills by the end of each session to see how they have progressed. The program curriculum also includes basic water safety skills and topics taught as part of each session. Each session will be (eight) 45-minute classes over two weeks. Classes will be Monday-Thursday with Friday being a makeup day. Morning and evening class sessions are available June 6 - July 28. There are also options for private and semi-private lessons. fourth grade students to visit the park for free

as part of the White House’s new “Every Kid in a Park” program. Fourth grade students can now go to everykidin­apark.gov to complete an activity and obtain a free annual entry pass to more than 2,000 federal recreation areas, including national parks. The park offers a variety of activities, including the Junior Ranger program, hiking a variety of trails throughout the park and possibly coming face to face with a Civil War soldier. To receive their free pass for national parks, students may visit the website and play a game to access the pass. Fourth graders and their families can use the pass for free entry to national parks and other federal public lands and waters across the country until Aug. 31, 2016. The website also includes fun and engaging learning activities aligned to educationa­l standards, trip planning tools, safety and packing tips and other important and helpful informatio­n for educators and parents. In addition to providing a free entry pass, fourth grade educators, youth group leaders and their students across the country may also participat­e in the program through field trips and other learning experience­s.
