AJGA crowns champions at WindStone

Nicolas Cassidy of Johns Creek, Ga. went wire-to-wire to win the AJGA’s Evitt Foundation RTC Junior AllStar Classic at WindStone Golf Club last week.

Cassidy, a rising high school sophomore, set a new tournament record with a three-day total of 14-under par (199). He opened with a 65, followed up with a 1-over 72, but shot a sparkling 9-under 62 on the final day to beat Orlando, Fla. resident and United Kingdom native Joseph Pagdin by four shots.

Sampson-Yunhe Zheng (Kissimmee, Fla.) was third at 205, followed by Thomas Bockholt (Austin, Texas) with a 207 and Luis Miguel Castro (Philippine­s) with a 209.

Cassidy had two eagles over his last four holes, including at Nos. 15 and 18. The eagle on his final hole came from 140 yards out.

The previous tournament record of 200 was set by Noah Goodwin in 2014.

Three local golfers compete in the boys’ event.

Rising Gordon Lee sophomore Tucker Windham had rounds of 71, 73 and 79 to shoot 223 and tie for 29th place. Rising sophomore Gavin Noble of Ringgold shot a 225 (71-81-73) to tie for 34th, while Bennett McNabb, an upcoming eighth grader from Ringgold, finished 52nd overall with a 284 (95-102-87).

In the girls’ division, Davidson, North Carolina’s Amanda Sambach had back-toback 74’s the first two days to take the lead. She added a 75 on the final day to finish with a 223 and a one-stroke victory over Wen Qi Zhu of China.

Katie Yoo (Windermere, Fla.) and Kynadie Adams (Gallatin, Tenn.) tied for third at 225, while Victoria Hwang (Orlando, Fla.) and Megan Schofill (Monticello, Fla.) were tied for fifth at 226.
