Heritage head football caoch EK Slaughter said his team was focused on the little things heading into the 2016 season.

Perseverence paid off, as the Generals were able to celebrate big following Friday's 38-0 shutshutout over visiting Lakeview-Fort Ogelthorpe that began with a bang. Luke Grant led the Navy-and-Red to their first score, returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown.

Slaughter said he couldn't say enough about his team's effort, and it was "good to start the season off on a positive note."

"Shut outs and kickoff returns don't come around very often," he said. "That was the seventh shut out in school history and second kickoff return, so we we were proud."

Slaughter said he was also extremely pleased with the efforts the Generals' took care of bussiness off the field as well. "I was glad the way they came out," he said. "We started from the first snap and executed really well, but it started before the game too."

"I was excited to see how they prepared throughout the day with how they were mentally and how they were in walk though. I think we have some good leadership, and it was good to see it show on the field."

The Generals extended the lead to 210 at the end of the first quarter with two more touchdowns including an 11 yard run by L. Hood (7:50) and a 45 yard touchdown pass from Corbee Wilson to Ryan Carter.

A field goal, and another touchdown by Hood in the second quarter - a 6 yard run - gave the Generals a 31-0 lead at the half.

Wilson's ran it in from the 9 with 4:06 to play in the third quarter to final the score.

Slaughter said he saw a lot of good things on Friday, but was most impressed with his receivers, who were rewarded with doughnuts.

Heritage will play on Friday at Ringgold, with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

A special ceremony will take place for the late Don Patterson.
