Woman charged with vehicular homicide

- By Adam Cook

A Ringgold woman is behind bars in Catoosa County facing vehicular homicide and drug charges after she struck and killed a pedestrian along I-75 near Ringgold Saturday morning, Oct. 29.

According to Georgia State Patrol Post 5 in Dalton:

Jordan Elizabeth Shelton, 22, of 1056 Bandy Lane was arrested Oct. 29 on charges of first-degree homicide by vehicle, DUI, possession of marijuana (less than one ounce), open container, drug-related objects, and failure to maintain lane.

Shelton remained in jail as of Wednesday, Nov. 2, with bond set at $8,400.

Troopers say the incident occurred shortly after 5 a.m, and ultimately claimed the life of 27-year-old

at some point, we need finalization on these cases.”

Hillman hasn’t been in court because he cannot be subpoenaed while the FBI’s investigation is going on. Angela Russell was questioned during a hearing in May 2015, but invoked her Fifth Amendment rights during her answer to every question about her involvement in the whole ordeal.

“If it goes past October 2017 and into 2018, my client wouldn’t get to trial until six years after being arrested,” Yeager said.

Rossville police detective David Scroggins, who worked side by side with Hillman as an original member of the task force, says he’s been questioned on more than one occasion about Hillman as part of the FBI’s investigation.

He told the court Saturday morning, Oct. 29, that he’s scheduled for another round of

questioning on Nov. 9, which will be the first formal interview he’s participated in since mid-2014.

That prompted Judge Brantley to grant Franklin’s request for the continuance, as it appears the FBI is actively pursuing the investigation.

“A dormant investigation is not an active investigation in my mind, “Brantley said. “That was the case, but the investigation doesn’t appear to be dormant anymore. I’m going to reluctantly grant the state’s motion

to continue.”

Brantley did add that if the FBI comes to some sort of resolution

in its investigation in the near future, he could modify his ruling if needed.
