Fort Oglethorpe marathon benefits 6th Cavalry Museum Nov. 12

-

Support the 6th Cavalry Museum at the Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon Saturday, Nov. 12. The event, organized by Chattanooga Track Club, includes a full marathon, a half marathon, a junior marathon and a 5k.

6th Cavalry Museum will receive $5 from every entry into the 5k. The full marathon and half marathon begin at 7:30 a.m. and the 5k begins at 8 a.m. All events start and finish at the 6th Cavalry Museum on Barnhardt Circle in Fort Oglethorpe.

This year marks the 37th year for the marathon while the 5k, running through historic Fort Oglethorpe was added four years ago. The Fort Oglethorpe 5k highlights historic homes, plaques detailing the military significance of the area and state monuments that honor those who served.

“It’s exciting to be part of the Battlefield Marathon this year,” said Chris McKeever, director of the 6th Cavalry Museum, “and we are extremely honored to benefit from the 5k. Money raised will help us with our continued mission to preserve the history of the Fighting Sixth Cavalry as well as fund programs such as our annual Remembering Heroes event we hold each October and the school day programs. This year over 1,100 school children attended our school day program to learn about the rich military heritage of our region from the Civil War to present day.”

Nearly 1,500 runners from across the United States and Canada are expected to participate in Battlefield Marathon events. In honor of all those who serve, the event offers a discount for military, law enforcement and emergency responders.

Following the 5K, runners are invited to relax and eat in the 6th Cavalry Museum’s special USO Canteen tent. In addition to the tent’s period decoration, it will also feature hostesses in period dress and 1940s music.
