Memorable season comes to end at Mary Persons

- By Misty Martin

The Heritage football team’s historical season came to an end on Friday following a 38-21 loss at Mary Persons (10-2) in the second round of the class AAAA state playoofs.

The Red-and-White, led by head coach E.K. Slaughter finished the season with an 8-4 mark that included the first-ever playoff appearance.

Slaughter said he had nothing but positive things to say about his team’s effort at the hands of the Bulldogs, keyed by running backs Zach Harvey and Quen Wilson.

“The kids played really hard,” he said. “They fought really hard and gave us a chance to win. They had a couple of chances to tie it up in the end, and just couldn’t make it happen.”

Mary Persons led only 14-7 at halftime and 21-14 in the third quarter before sealing the win in the fourth quarter on the final of Harvey’s three scores and a 31-yard James Davis to put the game out of reach.

Harvey rushed for 168 yards while Wilson finished with 158.

Slaughter said the Generals played with “guts and charater” all season long, including the entire game against Mary Persons.

“They’re a good team,” he said. “And that’s a tough place to play.”
