Gordon Lee forced to settle for third at Area 3-A Duals

- By Scott Herpst

The Gordon Lee Trojans missed out on a spot in the Class A State Duals after settling for third place in the Area 3-A Duals at Trion last Tuesday morning.

School closings and other weather-related delays forced the tournament, originally slated for Friday, Jan. 6, to be rescheduled three times. But by Tuesday, only four of the area’s nine teams were able to make the trip.

Trion defeated Bowdon in the opening round, while Gordon Lee suffered a 42-36 loss to Mt. Zion-Carroll. The two teams were tied with one match remaining, but the Eagles would get the final decisive pin to advance to the finals.

Gordon Lee defeated Bowdon, 64-10, in the consolation bracket, leaving the Trojans waiting to see if they would have a chance to wrestle for true second place at a spot at state. However, the host Bulldogs ended those hopes with a 66-14 win over Mt. Zion in the finals.

By rule, the Trojans could not challenge Mt. Zion for second having already lost to them earlier in the tournament.

Both Trion and Mt. Zion will represent Area 3 in the eight-team state brackets in Macon.

Hunter Burnette, Tucker Miller, Avery Geer, Jarrett Lassetter, Zach Murdock, Braden Jarvis and Caleb Vines all went 2-0 for the Trojans on the day.

The postponement of the Area Duals also forced Gordon Lee to call that night’s previously-scheduled home matches against Calhoun and North Murray. There has been no word on a make-up date.

Gordon Lee’s next scheduled event will be the Walker County Cup, which will be held at Ridgeland on Thursday (Jan. 19).
