Lady Generals fall to Sonoraville in preseason soccer scrimmage
A young Heritage Lady Generals soccer team took to their home field this past Thursday night for a preseason scrimmage against Sonoraville.
Brianna Smotherman scored off an assist from Jillian Roberts, but it would be the only goal the Navy-and-Red would manage in a 4-1 loss to the Lady Phoenix.
The tally came in the final 10 minutes of the match as Roberts sent what head coach Desiree Robinson called “a perfectly paced one-touch pass” to Smotherman, who beat the Sonoraville keeper with a blast to the back of the net.
“It was definitely not our usual scrimmage, but I believe it was one of the most helpful scrimmages we’ve had since I’ve been coaching for Heritage,” Robinson said. “It really allowed us to see where our strengths and weaknesses are and has allowed us start working on those weakness early on in the season.
“We have a great team this year with a lot of new freshmen so it may take us a little while. But I think we will be a fierce team once we click.”
Details on the boys’ scrimmage had not been reported as of press time.
The Lady Generals will kick off the 2017 season this Tuesday (Feb. 7) at home Southeast Whitfield at 5 p.m. The match will not count in the Region 6-AAAA standings. Heritage’s girls will have another non-region match at Dalton on Thursday.
