Elston goes over 1,000 career points as LFO wins twice

- By Scott Herpst

The LFO Lady Warriors picked up two close home wins over opponents from Chatsworth last week to improve to 16-9 on the season entering this week’s Region 6-AAA tournament at Calhoun High School.

LFO was scheduled to begin their region tournament on Monday against Bremen at 8:30 p.m., but due to newspaper deadlines, results were not available as of press time.

A win by the Lady Warriors on Monday would put them in a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday against Haralson County or Coahulla Creek.

The Lady Warriors lost the turnover battle to Murray County, 1715, last Tuesday night. However, the Red-andWhite made up for it by enjoying a huge advantage in the paint in a victory over the Lady Indians in Fort Oglethorpe.

LFO outscored Murray County 28-10 in the lane and 13-3 on second chance points as they held off the visitors in the second half.

The Lady Warriors led 10-2 after one quarter and 24-14 at the break. Murray County would trim the gap to two starting the fourth, but LFO would come up with enough down the stretch to grab the subregion victory.

Jazzmyn Elston had a huge night for the home team, scoring 26 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Macey Gregg added seven points, while Anna Roundtree and Sydni Eaves had four each.

The Lady Warriors sent Elston and Eaves out as winners on Senior Night as they fought off the Lady Mountaineers to win this past Friday.

Elston had 29 points and 12 rebounds for the Lady Warriors, who led 19-6 after one quarter of play. The Lady Mountaineers cut into the lead by halftime, trailing 24-17 at the break, only to see the home team stretch it back out to 40-25 at the start of the fourth quarter.

North Murray made a fourth-quarter comeback, but it was too little, too late from the girls from Chatsworth.

Gregg had 10 points and six rebounds. Maia Payne added seven points and Eaves finished with three points, three rebounds and five assists.

Elston also broke the 1,000 career-point barrier in the win.

The Warriors dropped to 5-20 overall with the loss on Friday. Zack Thompson had eight points in defeat.

LFO is slated to play Sonoraville at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the Region 6-AAA tournament.

With a win, they would play at 8:30 Wednesday night against North Murray or Bremen.

The boys’ region tournament will also be played at Calhoun High School.
