Tough season ends for Warriors

The book was closed on the LFO Warriors’ 2016-2017 basketball season on Tuesday night as the Red-and-White fell to Sonoravill­e, 6441, in the opening round of the Region 6-AAA tournament at Calhoun High School.

The Phoenix jumped out to a fast start and controlled the game from there. They led 20-8 after the first quarter before putting the game almost completely out of reach with a 16-6 advantage County (75) was fifth.

Ringgold finished with 66.5 points to place sixth in the team standings for Class AAA.

“We brought four guys down here and they all wrestled hard,” Ringgold head coach David Moss said. “Logan wrestled well and he’s just a freshman. He’s part of a really good group of kids we’ve got coming back, including Griffin. The state tournament is hard to win and tough to lose.

“Our guys have been working hard for the past two or three years. They’re starting to have some success and we hope to continue that success next year and do better than we did this year. We won some tournament­s and some dual meets this year and finished sixth out of 40 teams (at state), so it was a good year.”

LFO’s Nathan in the second period as they took a 36-14 lead going into the locker room.

Sonoravill­e was led by Wil Walraven, who scored 16 points. Brad Wilson added 13, including a trio of 3-pointers. Bryce Waters scored nine and Trent Daniel chipped in with eight as the Phoenix picked up their 20th win of the season.

The lone player in double figures for LFO (5-21) was Zach Thompson with a gamehigh 20 points. The All-Region selection Williams, the only Warrior wrestle to make it to Macon, placed fifth at 170 pounds to tie LFO with Pike County for 25th place in Class AAA with 11 points.

Commerce ran away with the state championsh­ip in Class A with 238.5 points with Trion (98) finishing a distant second. Gordon Lee (75) tied for sixth.

In Class AA, Social Circle claimed the state title with 160 points, beating out Elbert County (136) for the crown.

The Class AAAAA title went to Buford with 243.5 points, while Union Grove and Woodland-Cartersvil­le tied for second at 160.

Alexander was crown Class AAAAAA champ with 140.5 points. South Paulding (114.5) was second.

And in Class AAAAAAA, Camden County easily won the title with 259 points, while Archer (125) was second. also pulled down 11 rebounds. Triston Bennett finished with six points.

“We’re losing four seniors,” LFO head coach Jerry Jones said of Bennett, Josh Green, Noah Harris and D.J. Miles. “They played hard, were important to our team and were helpful to our younger players. The season didn’t go as we wanted it to go, but we’re still happy that our team hung in there.”
