Heritage nets tennis sweep at Ridgeland Lady Warriors rally to boot Ridgeland in season’s first win

The Heritage tennis teams picked up a 5-0 wins at Ridgeland this past Wednesday in the first Region 6-AAAA matches of the year for the Navyand-Red.

The Heritage boys (2-1, 1-0) received forfeits in all three singles matches. The team of Blake Richardson and Ethan Bone scored a 6-0, 6-0 win over Corey Housley and Tristen Card, while Brendan Robinson and Nick Darling beat Blake Espy/ Anthony Woodward, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 doubles.

The Panthers dropped to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the region with the loss.

In the girls’ match, the Lady Generals moved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in 6-AAAA with a 5-0 victory.

Caroline Horsley beat Savannah Hulgan, 6-0, 6-0, at No.1 singles. Emma Lokey defeated Nicole Payne, 6-1, 6-0 and Maleah McAlister won by forfeit.

In doubles, Reagan Christol and Katelyn Burns handled Calissa Morgan and Lexi Mitchell, 6-0, 6-0, while the team of Erin Hulsey and Cadence Burton took down Ally Wensets and Lana Veal, 6-1, 6-0.

Heritage will play again on Tuesday, March 14 at home against LaFayette.

They will host Northwest Whitfield on Thursday and play at Southeast Whitfield this upcoming Monday.

The LFO Lady Warriors finally collected their initial victory of the 2017 season last Monday, beating Ridgeland by a 3-1 count.

The game was a make-up of a match originally slated for Feb. 28.

Sydney Moss, Chelsey Lindsay and Lexi Tipton all found the net for LFO, while Lindsay and Deandre Rowe each had assists. Rebecca Leggett recorded 15 saves in goal.

Ridgeland got a firsthalf goal from Katie Carruth and took a 1-0 lead into intermissi­on before allowing the Lady Warriors all three of their goals in the second half.

The LFO boys faced Howard of Chattanoog­a last Monday night and dropped a 4-0 decision at Tommy Cash Stadium.

LFO swept at Calhoun

The LFO boys’ soccer team fell to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in Region 6-AAA play with a 10-2 loss at Calhoun on Thursday. Bryan Castro and Ethan Wofford both scored for the Warriors.

The Lady Jackets completed the sweep with a 2-0 win over the Lady Warriors, who fell to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in region play.

LFO’s teams will be at home on Tuesday as they face Sonoravill­e. Murray County will play at LFO on Thursday and both the Warriors and Lady Warriors will play at Bremen on Friday.

Heritage stumbles at Northwest

After seeing last Tuesday’s scheduled matches postponed by rain, the Heritage High School soccer teams made the brief drive to Tunnel Hill last Wednesday to take on Northwest Whitfield in a pair of Region 6-AAAA matches.

The drive home, however, turned out to be much longer.

The Lady Bruins got a goal from Cynthia Cornel and used an own goal by the Lady Generals to claim a 2-0 win in the opener.

Then in the nightcap, the Generals scored the first goal of the night on a tally by Jacob Emahiser, but the No. 6-ranked Bruins would score the next eight as they rolled to the 8-1 victory.

The Generals are now 3-2 overall and 1-1 in 6-AAAA play.

The Lady Generals bounced back nicely from Wednesday’s loss to post a dominating 10-1 win over visiting Pickens.

Heritage (5-2, 2-1) got a hat trick apiece from Brianna Smotherman and Anna Boley, while Sarah Hall, Austin Brookshire and Caylee Carpenter had one goal each. Smotherman assisted on two other goals, while Carpenter, Hall, Finley Brisendine, Sydney Eaker and Lucy Hicks were also credited with assists in the win.

The Heritage boys will play Pickens at home on April 19.

Both the Generals and Lady Generals will play on Tuesday at Southeast Whitfield, starting at 5:30 p.m.

Sonoravill­e sweeps Ringgold

The Lady Phoenix opened the night with an 11-2 victory over the Lady Tigers, while the Phoenix completed the sweep with a 7-0 victory.

Individual details for Ringgold were not provided as of press time.

Both Ringgold teams are 0-2 overall and 0-1 in region play.

The Ringgold boys will host county rival Heritage on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in a non-region game.
