Professional wrestling returns to LaFayette on Saturday night

- By Josh O’Bryant

Wrestling fans in Walker County can start counting down the days for the bell to ring as pro wrestling — the way it should be — returns to the area this weekend.

On Saturday, Jim Powell Presents Pro Wrestling will make its return to LaFayette for the first time in 15 years under the Southern Legacy Wrestling banner. It will take place as the LaFayette Recreation Center (708 Foster Mill Drive). Bell time is 7:30 p.m.

The two-hour show will consist of six matches. Concession and wrestling merchandise will also be available.

The Southeast has a large history with professional wrestling and the northwest Georgia area is no stranger to the lineage and history of the squared circle.

City Club in LaFayette is a large sponsor for the event, while Wallis-Wilbanks Funeral Home, North Georgia Computer, the LaFayette Recreation Center, Los Guerreros and The Real Deal, will also sponsor the event.

Powell is the owner of The Real Deal in LaFayette, but he is also known in wrestling circles as “The Original Dirty White Boy”. Powell often wrestled over 400 times a year and sometimes as many as nine times a week during his two decades’ of work in the ring. He also worked in the business as a promoter and booker.

“I want to use the years of experience I had as a professional wrestler to bring a good wrestling card to LaFayette on a monthly basis and if we can’t have good wrestling, we won’t have wrestling at all,” Powell said. “This isn’t your local ‘wrasslin’ show. “This is pro wrestling the way it should be.”

Front row tickets are $12 and general admission tickets are $10. Children 12 and under will be admitted for $5. Advanced tickets can be purchased by calling The Real Deal at (706) 639-3310.

“We want to give the community something they can be proud of when they leave the show,” Powell said.
