Family Crisis Center staff visits Governor for “Stop Violence Against Women Day”

- By Adam Cook

The Family Crisis Center of Catoosa, Walker, Dade, & Chattooga Counties (FCC) staff recently traveled to Atlanta to meet with state officials as part of the Feb. 8 “Stop Violence Against Women Day.”

The trip allowed FCC staff members the opportunity to not only bring awareness to an ongoing struggle they witness daily, but also allowed them the chance to share their work and mission with some of the state’s decision makers.

“It was a great chance for us to meet with our legislators,” said Kristy Lawson, director of the FCC. “It was a day where we were able to go down there and make them aware of some of the bills that are coming down, and basically bring awareness to our organizations, our missions, and the importance of the issue of domestic violence.”

Lawson says her staff was able to meet with Ga. State Senator Jeff Mullis, Lt. Governor Casey Cagle, and Governor Nathan Deal.

The FCC provides shelter and assistance to local women and children who are victims of domestic violence.

The issue has been ongoing for decades, which is why Lawson feels it’s important to discuss the matter with any and everyone she can, especially elected officials.

“Every year domestic violence advocates throughout the state of Georgia travel to the capital for “Stop Violence Against Women Day” to help bring awareness to domestic violence and how important funding is for our agencies,” Lawson said. “It’s also important to have discussions with them and bring awareness to some of the domestic and family violence bills that are being brought before Senate during legislation.”
