Generals beat Mountaineers

A 42 from Matthew Redman and a 44 from Patrick Redman helped the Heritage Generals post a 178194 golf victory over North Murray in a match at Indian Trace in Chatsworth on Thursday.

Logan Self had a 45 and Trevor Badacour shot 47 to round out the team total.

In the girls’ match, Brooke Barnes carded a 44 for the Lady Generals, but it was not enough to get by the Lady Mountaineers, who picked up the 124-143 win.

Carson Nixon had a 46 for Heritage, while Caroline Bentley shot a 51.

Too much heat blew away the Southeast Whitfield Raiders as the Heritage Generals swept a doubleheader at home last Tuesday night.

Heritage pitcher Nolan Letzgus, a sophomore who consistently throws in the 80s, closed the deal in the second game. Letzgus’s one-inning dominance cemented a 4-1 victory.

A slew of hits and situational baseball propelled the Generals to four runs in the first four innings thanks to a six-hit effort. Brody Campbell went 2-for-3 with a double, while Johnathan Hickman, Luke Grant, Joseph Hill and Cole Wilcox all contributed a hit.

The winning pitcher for the day was Alex Barbee, who struck out four and gave up one earned run in six innings pitched. The Raiders had five hits, but starting pitcher Javier Favela gave up three earned runs.

In the first game, the Generals dominated the Raiders, winning the game 9-1.

Nine hits overall were critical for the Generals, including two extra base hits each by Campbell and Blake Bryan.

Meanwhile, Heritage starting pitcher Tripp Church recorded the victory, striking out seven in five innings pitched.

The Generals pounded out 14 hits and Wilcox gave up just one as the Navyand-Red finished off a three-game sweep of the Raiders five-inning win in Dalton on Thursday.

Wilcox struck out six and walked one in the win. The only hit he allowed was a single by opposing pitcher Murphy Flood, who ended up taking the loss.

Wilcox also went 2-for-3 at the dish with an RBI. Hickman was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Hill had two hits, two RBIs and scored three runs, while Lance Dockery was 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Alex Coulter doubled twice and Campbell also picked up an RBI as the Generals moved to 7-2 in Region 6-AAAA play. The Generals knocked in 10 runs in two innings to outclass the Hurricanes on Saturday.

The five-run third inning was ignited when Hurricane pitcher Chuck Bronson walked Hickman to drive in a run. With a slew of wild pitches thrown by Bronson and Hurricanes’ middle reliever Jeremy Carr, the Generals were able to overtake the lead thanks to Bryce Bird, who drove in a run off a Carr pitch in the third inning on a great day for America’s pastime.

Heritage was able to tack on five more runs in the fifth, thanks to a wild pitch, singles by Bird and Wilcox and errors by the Hurricanes,

Six different Generals contributed to an eight-hit night. Campbell went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Bird went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and Wilcox went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Although runs weren’t at a premium, starting pitcher Dakota Bandy earned the win for the Generals after one earned run, four hits and four strikeouts in five innings.

The Generals scraped by in Game of the home twinbill to pick up another nonregion win.

Down 7-6, Wilcox hit a two-run double in the bottom of a six-run sixth inning to put Heritage in front for good.

Despite the strenuous ending, the Generals jumped out with a 1-0 lead on a Josh Gibson single in the first inning and they led 4-2 after three innings. But things got interesting as Heritage relief pitcher Justin Morris walked a batter, which helped engineer a five-run inning for the Signal Mountain in the fourth inning.

A seven-hit night by the Eagles was outdone by the Generals’ 11-hit night. Hickman went 3-for-3 with an RBI, Gibson went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Bird went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Church, the Generals’ fifth different pitcher of the game, threw the seventh inning to get the win. He allowed no earned runs, no hits and struck out one.

The hard-fought win puts Heritage at 15-5 on the year. They will get back into Region 6-AAAA play this week with a three-game series against Pickens.
