Heritage High book club meets with author Courtney C. Stevens

- By Adam Cook

The Heritage High School book club had a fun opportunity to meet the author of a novel it recently read when Nashville writer Courtney “Court” C. Stevens dropped by the school for a visit on Wednesday, March 29.

Stevens, a popular author of young adult books, brought a lot of energy, excitement, and fun to the Heritage Theatre as she spoke to students about life, dreams, and their futures.

Stevens read a couple of pages from the “Faking Normal” novel, shared her story about growing up as an athlete and writer, and also explained why she writes her genre of novels.

“The book is contemporary realistic, which means... it could happen,” Stevens said. “People ask my why I write about sad subjects, and it’s because it’s real. I like telling aftermath stories... there are people that end up in our lives that are the gifts that help us get through things.”

According to Heritage High School media specialist Rhonda Sixto, the club came across Stevens’ novel back in the fall and it had a great impact on everyone who read it.

“I’m constantly looking for our next great book to read, so this fall, I was trying to figure out what our next book would be, and I ran into Kelly Fleming of Barnes & Noble, who told me about this phenomenal book, “Faking Normal,” by Courtney Stevens,” Sixto explained. “I ordered it, read it, and fell in love, as did the club.”

In addition to the book club hearing Stevens speak, several other classes attended the session, which resulted in Stevens winning over even more students as fans.

“We had several non-book club members that attended as well,” Sixto added. “I felt like Courtney’s talk appealed to everyone. I had a few teachers comment that they wished the entire student body could have been there to hear her speak.”
