Man tased several times trying to run from police

- By Adam Cook

A Chickamauga man had to be tased several times and was arrested on multiple charges in Fort Oglethorpe for fighting and trying to run from authorities, police say.

According to the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department:

Jesse Stephen Paradise, 40, of West Cove Road, was arrested April 17 on five counts of obstructing or hindering law enforcement, aggravated assault, criminal trespassing, and loitering and prowling, as well as two outstanding warrants out of Walker County, Ga. and Gadsden, Ala. His bond was set at $27,500.

The physical altercation between Paradise and police began around 2:12 a.m. Monday, April 17, when he allegedly fled from a vehicle pursuit.

Paradise was stopped while walking along Stovall Street.

“I advised him to show me his hands and lay down on the ground,” Officer James Davis said. “He did not follow commands and instead pulled out a knife and said, ‘This is all I have’.”

Paradise then tried to run, at which time Davis says he tased him in the upper back.

After falling to the ground, Paradise freed himself from the taser wires and tried to run again.

Catoosa County sheriff’s Deputy Brittany Gilleland arrived at the scene to assist Davis, but she was kicked in the head and jaw while trying to restrain his legs, reports show.

A second FOPD officer arrived and tased Paradise again, but it had little impact as Paradise was able to climb a fence in a third attempt to run from police.

Two more sheriff’s deputies arrived and assisted in tackling Paradise to the ground to get him handcuffed.

Eventually, officers were able to get Paradise safely into custody. They found his knife in the middle of the street on Elain Circle.

Paradise was taken to Cornerstone Medical Center for evaluation before being booked into Catoosa County jail.
