Heritage girls win NGAC track title

- By Scott Herpst

In second place by 9.5 points following the completion of the field events last Tuesday, the Heritage Lady Generals knew they would need a solid Wednesday on the track to pull out an NGAC championship.

And that’s exactly what they got.

While Heritage won just two of the eight track finals, they had six top-three finishers and a steady stream of points in each event would ultimately be enough to win the conference title.

The Lady Generals accumulated 107.5 points to best rival Chattanooga Valley (95.5) by 12 points. Gordon Lee, who had the lead after Day 1, ended up third with 90 points, while Ringgold (78.5) was fourth.

Saddle Ridge (40), LaFayette (28), Lakeview (15) and Rossville (4.5) rounded out the final standings.

“It’s definitely sweet to win it on your own home track,” Heritage head coach Steve Bradley said. “Between us and Chattanooga Valley, we’ve battled back and forth all season. But the last couple of meets, our girls got tough, winning the Gordon Lee Invitational (two weeks ago) and then today with the NGAC.”

Gordon Lee took the lead after Day 1 by winning three of the four field events. Arilyn Lee swept the shot put (29-6 1/2) and the discus (81-3), while Kaylee Brown won in the high jump (4-10), setting a new personal record in the process. Addison Sturdivant
