GDOT upgrading traffic lights in Ringgold, other North Georgia counties

- By Adam Cook

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is upgrading five traffic lights throughout Ringgold, a project that has caused some traffic congestion downtown.

According to City Manager Dan Wright, the city recently requested the town’s traffic signal lights have metal mast arm poles, as a way of keeping in line with the recent downtown streetscape project.

“These lights have the more polished downtown look,” Wright said. “We also contributed to have them painted black to match the historic Sternberg light fixtures in downtown.

Wright says the contracted work is being done on behalf and through DOT, but that the city did have to assist with some work recently when a water main was struck.

“On Monday, July 31, the contractor did hit a water main that caused the city to have to make a repair on Tennessee Street,” Wright explained.

Right now, crews are working on the intersection of Nashville Street and Tennessee Street.

According to GDOT Communications Officer Mohamed Arafa, the work in Ringgold is part of an larger traffic light project in North Georgia that began last fall.

“Work on the upgrading of five traffic signals in Ringgold is expected to be completed by the end of October,” Arafa said. “Hopefully, we will get some cooperation from Mother Nature and complete this work on schedule. The traffic signal work in Ringgold is part of a larger project to upgrade traffic signals at various locations in Catoosa, Dade and Walker counties. Work on this project began early November 2016. The entire project is scheduled to be completed by the end of October 2017, at a construction cost of little over two million dollars.”
