Gordon Lee spikers go 2-2 in first season’s first week
The Gordon Lee Lady Trojans traveled south to Floyd County last Tuesday to open the 2017 volleyball season and dropped their first two matches of the year.
The Navy-and-White fell to host Coosa, 2514, 25-11. The Lady Eagles were the Class AA state runners-up in 2016. In the nightcap, Sonoraville - who advanced to the Elite Eight in Class AAA a year ago - held off the Lady Trojans, 25-22 and 25-20.
Individual statistics were not available as of press time.
Gordon Lee got back on track at home on Thursday as they picked up victories over Armuchee and Ridgeland.
Gordon Lee (2-2) needed three sets to take down the Lady Indians, 25-21, 20-25 and 25-21, while the Lady Trojans dispatched their Walker County foes in straight sets, 2521 and 25-17.
Aubree Yancey had 13 kills and two blocks on the night. Gracie O’Neal recorded 12 kills and seven aces, while Mallory Collier finished with 27 total assists.
The night’s other match saw Armuchee defeat Ridgeland, 25-17 and 25-10, dropping the Lady Panthers to 0-2 on the year.
Jayda Jenkins finished with six kills against Armuchee and had three against Gordon Lee. Rachel Atchley had a total of 15 assists on the night, while Landree Dunn, Tori Elliott and Sarah Williams each had two kills against the Lady Trojans.
Gordon Lee will be back at home on Tuesday to face LFO and LaFayette, starting at 5 p.m., while Ridgeland will host Northwest and Coahulla
Creek on Tuesday at 5. The Northwest match will not count in the 6-AAAA standings.
On Thursday, Gordon Lee will join Northwest for a tri-match at Ringgold, starting at 5, while Ridgeland will head across state lines to Lookout Valley for a tri-match that also includes Hixson. Those matches are slated to begin at 5:30.
Both Gordon Lee and Ridgeland will take part in the LFO Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 19, beginning at 8 a.m.
